Question about Amana CW65T Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Microwave Not Working

My Amana Radarange, Model CW65T Manufactured in October 1994, stopped working during operation. I opened the microwave up and replaced a blown fuse. I then attempted to use the microwave again and the fuse blew again. There doesn't appear to be any obvious short-circuits, everything appears to be clean.

Does any one have any suggestions? Are their any instruction manuals available online to conduct a diagnosis?

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use (in order given) for test help, but read the safety warnings first:

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

You have blown a fuse. Check inside the oven chamber and look for missing powder paint or signs of arcing, if so there is a paint to repair microwaves for this issue or else just dispose of the microwave. If the inside is good remove all the screws and remove the cover. Replace the fuse. If the magnetron was making louder noises prior then replace the magnetron. Since the fuse went the giant capacitor is likely bad. While the cabinet is open make sure to look for burned wires, check the continuity of thermal cutoffs, and check the main circuit-board for burned traces or components. The relays in most electronics are known for arcing (spot welding) and staying in the wrong position. Tap them hard with the back end of a screwdriver. During all of this use safe electrical practices by having the power cord unplugged. The capacitor could still have a high charge on it so be careful.

Yes there are fuses inside.
There are lethal voltages within Microwave ovens that can stay charged up for many days. If you do not understand the hazards, get it repaired by a qualified electrician.

My microwave oven keeps tripping the circuit breaker.i replaced the outlet that it plugs into but it still trips it. is there an internal fuse in the oven that may be bad?

If a fuse inside had blown, that would definitely reduce the current flow rather than trip the breaker.
I have replaced several breakers over the years; they no longer last forever.
Try your Amana on a different circuit, not in the kitchen; if that other circuit likes the oven, the breaker is bad. If the alternate circuit breaker also trips, then you have not a blown fuse in the Amana but rather a shorted component inside and repairing the oven will likely cost about the same as replacing it.
