Returned the item to the supplier and demanded a refund on the grounds that the goods were not of merchantable quality! Bought a different make - one from a more reputable manufacturer!

Hi, We have a Panasonic Viera Plasma TV. The TV was on when all of a sudden we heard a few clicking noises and then the picture was lost and a 'no signal' message was displayed. We tried other channels...


It sounds like you have taken the steps to isolate the problem to the TV. it seems to be a bad tuner on the Main board. The no signal displayed indicates the TV is otherwise okay. If you have a DVD player or other source you can connect, and you get a picture, then your TV has a bad tuner for sure.

What do you know about the hdtv rotar remote outdoor amplifier antennaes, will it solve our tv breaking up in the picture


if the pic breaks up due to signal loss a message will be displayed on the screen,(no signal)
if the signal is weak and not arriving at the aerial then there will be nothing to amplify
I would check that all connections from the back of the tv right up to the aerial are ok,check that you have line of site from your aerial to the transmitter ie-no trees in the way,is the aerial aimed in the correct direction,sometimes strong winds can turn an aerial
Have a look at your neighbours aerials ,how do they compare with yours,

I dont think you really need to install a fancy aerial for no real gain

How do you tune in a sense 51 - 19dvdw tv to channels


First check your aerial.
If other devices such as PVRs or other TVs can receive a signal then the Sense 51-19 should be OK also

Turn on the TV.
Press the "TV/.AV" button until the letters "DVB" (Digital Video Broadcast) appear on top right of screen.
Wait until patterned blue screen is displayed and the message "No Signal" is shown.
Press "SYS MENU" 3 times
"General Menu" should be displayed with Language option in highlight.
Press the "CH+" button once to move the highlight to the "Reset" option.

Press the "TV/TXT-DVB MENU" (this has the letters "SET" engraved on the button itself.

The TV will mute and a sub-menu will be displayed in the top left of screen.

Use the "CH+" or "CH-" to scroll to the desired option.

Cannot get a good signal for Channel 5 or Channel 5 etc. However signal for BBC is excllent. Help


I would try the tv on another known aerial and then re install on the new aerial. as what you describe sound like a signal fault.

I have a brand new technika tv 216/54g. It has freeview built in. I have a brand new indoor digital amplified aerial also technika but I cant get it to pick up any stations. Do I need anything else? please...


Hi there,

You don't necessarily need anything else, but you may not have a strong enough signal to pick up the digital/freeview channels using an indoor aerial. It could also be that the indoor aerial is not correctly aligned.

If the signal strength is lower than approx. 50%, the TV may detect them during the automatic channel scan but it wont store them. When the signal strength for any digital channel is 50% or lower it's more or less unwatchable - the picture would be constantly breaking-up or freezing and the audio drops out continually. Trying to scan for channels using an indoor aerial is rather hit and miss. Numerous attempts may be necessary before you get any channels.

Assuming you have a roof aerial, it is far easier to temporarily connect the TV to a fixed aerial point while you run the automatic channel scan. The TV will store all the channels and you can then move it to it's permanent location and connect the indoor aerial. You can then adjust the indoor aerial with the channels already stored until you find a location for the aerial where you have a good signal.

Doing it this way also eliminates the possibility of a fault with the TV and confirms that you are performing the channel scan correctly. If the TV is connected to a fixed aerial point and you are still unable to receive or store any channels, then it's likely that you are performing the channel scan incorrectly or there is a fault with the TV.

Please try scanning your channels using a known working fixed aerial point. If you are still unable
to receive any channels - or you don't have any fixed aerial points - please post back for further assistance.

Most of the channels breaking up despite auto retuning


could be one of a few things,
low signal strength, aerial out of line with transmitter.
bad coax connections losing signal strength.
coax broken inside, or old and not low loss.
Get the aerial checked for direction, half a degree out of line over a few miles and you will lose a lot of signal strength, as will old coax (aerial cable) and if you are using an unshielded coax you could be losing signal strength through the cable itself. Replace the connecters and try to use a straight run of cable instead of having joins in it as these joins, even if using connecters, will cause a weak signal. If yiu are running more than one tv off your aerial, invest in a booster.

HAVE GOT A SWISSTEC 15 INCH TV BUILT IN FREEVIEW, BUT CA NOT GET ITV 1 OR CHANNEL 4 ON IT. HAVE TRIED RETUNNING BUT NO GOOD


The model number would usually be on the back of the TV but in this case it's immaterial as Swisstec appear to have had a very brief existence. Their website no longer works (skymediamanufacturing.com, no connection to Sky satellite tv) and the few products which have their brand name on all seem to be at outlets like ALDI and Makro which often specialise in clearance lines and bankrupt stock.

First, check that your missing channels haven't been shifted to 801, 802 etc. This is happening with some equipment and it's just how some slightly incompatible equipment handles the retune.

What you have said about your aerial system does not eliminate the possibility of an aerial fault; as you're running multiple items off one aerial I'd fully expect it to be a high gain aerial, but this does not necessarily mean that it's a wide band aerial. In addition, each time the signal from a single aerial is split there is typically up to a 10dB loss (around 60% each time). Regular analogue reception equipment can cope with this far better than Freeview receivers as the analogue signals are vastly more powerful than the digital ones. One of the most important UK transmitters puts out a 100kW (i.e. 100 000W) analogue signal along with an 800W Freeview one making the analogue signal 125x stronger at the transmitter and far weaker further away.

Realistically, you have limited options. Most Freeview receivers have an onscreen menu in the digital tuner which has a signal strength and quality meter for each channel. If most of the channels have a middling signal with good quality then your reception is most likely ok so look at the aerial cable at the back of the set to see how long the plug into the back of the tv is. If it's longer than about 2cm then it probably has an in-line suppressor fitted onto the end of the plug. Usually there's a marking of either 6dB or 10dB on the suppressor. Remove any suppressor and try retuning.

If that didn't work then check as much of your aerial system as possible paying special attention to the plugs and splitters. No plug should be showing any bare wire, and the external screening braids must not be touching the internal signal wire. You'll probably have to undo each plug to check for this and remake any shoddy work. If you have aerial splitters which are the push together variety then check the connections are tight. Also consider replacing them with the screw threaded F-terminal splitters which all professional installers use. These cost very little more than the useless things sold in most DIY stores and general retail outlets but hugely reduce signal losses. I've posted an online address of a supplier at the end of my post, but you can also get them from your local Maplin store usually at extra cost.

If you have an amplified aerial then try disconnecting the amplifier. These are often inappropriately fitted and cause digital signal meters to show the confusing message of a strong signal with poor quality. A good quality weak signal can be successfully amplified but a poor quality signal requires a better aerial installation.

If you have eliminated all doubt regarding your aerial then the fault is most likely with the receiver itself. The official advice is to try retuning but you've almost certainly done that. There is a list of equipment known to have problems with the retune (see second web address) but it's not comprehensive and misses out minor brands like Swisstec. Clearly you cannot contact Swisstec and they are in no position to rectify the problem themselves any more. Under these circumstances your only remaining option is to buy a new external receiver from around £20 and connect it to your tv as if it never had an internal receiver.

Note that the UK Sale of Goods Act was recently amended to allow purchasers up to six years protection against goods which are not of "satisfactory quality" (replacing the earlier term "merchantable quality"). You've had your tv for eighteen months and the tv itself still works, but as a super-budget unknown brand it's doubtful that you could press your rights regarding the failed Freeview receiver.

Sorry this is not the easy fix you were hoping for but I hope that it's been of some assistance.

It may well be your aerial despite the success with your DVD recorder.

Digital signals are very much weaker than analogue ones, and when multiple devices share a single aerial you can get this kind of problem. You also lose about 60% of the signal at each point in your aerial cable where there are signal splitters.

There are a number of possible solutions:-

First, look at every bit of coaxial cable you have between the aerial and each appliance. Check especially at the aerial end for corrosion or poor shielding/installation and especially for evidence of rain water penetration. If the aerial is on the roof then it will cost almost as much to get the aerial inspected as it will to have it replaced, so skip to the next option. But otherwise, check along every bit of the cable for any cuts or splits in the insulation and properly remake every junction or joint if there are any doubts about them. If the cable is in poor condition then consider option three instead.

The second is to try to see if you get a better digital signal from another transmitter, this will involve trying different aerial positions so is impractical if your aerial is roof mounted but is worth trying if it's in the loft instead. It doesn't always follow that your best digital signal will be from the transmitter which you used for analogue transmissions.

Thirdly, if you're still using the same aerial as you have done for years then it's worth upgrading to one optimised for digital reception. When doing this it's foolish not to replace the cabling as well as you need it to be as good as possible. With analogue, many installers got away with using cheaper cable intended only for very short cable runs from the wall socket to the tv.

The fourth option is the budget option but can work as well as the third option: fit an additional analogue style aerials and run a separate cable down to each appliance. If these are fitted in the loft and you have the space, then there's no aesthetic or planning concerns. Normally the extra cables can run partway down through the house alongside existing cables, but for best signal quality keep them separate and ensure that the cable runs as as short as possible.

One further thing which you may want to try before all else: connect your digital box directly to the aerial cable which currently feeds your dvd recorder. Leave all other tv devices disconnected from the aerial. If the box retunes correctly then it's definitely a supply of signal issue as outlined above and if not then you should add the exact make and model of your digibox as a comment to this answer as there are a large number of earlier digibox models which cannot retune correctly due to evolving standards.
