Thanks for the quick reply, by element - do you mean the picture tube? There is one main board in the TV and a smaller board attached to the pix tube. I thought maybe replacing the main board might do it assuming it isn't too expensive. I could replace the board myself it doesn't look too complicated. Hey, times are tough :) the set is about 6 years old.

Hello there. I'm sorry to say that it sounds as if the element that actually energizes your screen is bad. It is most likely overheating. or quite poosible the power converter lost a resistor or 2.

I'm assuming that your TV uses an electron gun to excite the phosphors that let you see a picture. the element would be the 'gun'. the sound you descrideb is indicate of a faulty electromagnetic unit. something that changes/mixes the power from your house and the information from the video input and sends the level info to the gun. I'm over simplifying, but that's the gist. If your not against possibly permanently damaging the machine, you could always get a multimeter and test. if you do, be very cautious. you must have it powered down and MUST discharge the capacitors (they can hold a signifigant charge even after being powered down for a long time), usually via the coil around the screen. if you are not comfortable doing this, please just let it be. much better safe than electrically shocked.

Sylvania SRT2232S 32" was working

The problem is in the vertical deflection circuits which is responsible for giving a full picture. Since the set is 8 years old the money would be better spent on a new tv since more frequent break downs in other parts of the set would be more likely due to age.

Sylvania MTS/SAP TV.
I don't have a remote
I accidentally hit the ''menu'' button on the front. Now I can't get the TV to show anything but static -- like there is no signal coming in from receiver (either through input jacks on front or on rear. Menu gives various options, but none of them gets me back to being able to see the picture.

Stopped working and squealing sound

Your set is shorted circuit condition. The power supply is making the noise. Unfortunately almost any of the hi current circuits will do this. If picture went out 1st look for video or hi voltage problems.

Sleep

If you unplug the unit for an hour or overnight, it should go out of sleep mode. If this dosent work then its not in sleep mode and the set has a problem in the power supply or the sweep circuit. Sorry you should seek a pro to assist you in this repair. Good Luck
