I may be having similar problem with my ES40V.

The unit was functioning just fine up until I came home from purchasing a new phone/answer machine set up and installed that on the shelf just below the ES40V. I'd had the previous phone/answer machine unit on the same shelf with no affects to anything else around it on my desk.

I'm wondering if the setting up of the phone unit and programming it and the 2 phone handhelds messed with the programming of the DMR-ES40V because just after setting up the new phone set I went to program a new timed-record setting on the Panasonic DMR-ES40V for a show coming up and discovered my remote wouldn't work other than to garner the message "RC1" on the unit's LCD display screen.

I found the instruction manual which offered no assist. I went on-line and found a few sites, this one among them, in which on one of them someone posted a reply that allowed me to get some function back in my remote, that being being able t switch to "TV", be able to "play", "rewind", "forward" and, apparently "record" on tape or similar functions on DVD.

I seem also to be able to go up and down the channels. However, the only thing I can see on my TV screen, when is supposed "VC/DVD" unit mode, is heavy grey/black/white disturbance.

I can NOT get into any "menu" or "set up" via the "Functions" button on the remote. The only operations that seems to work are when I use the "VCR/TV" button at bottom right of the remote to switch to "TV" which gets me a clear image and being able to turn the unit "On" and "Off".

Nothing in the manual or anywhere on-line seems to have any dialogue and answers regarding this situation. The above inquiry on this site seems to be the closest to what I'm experiencing with my DMR-ES40V.

Currently, when I look at the LCD screen what I see is, in order from left to right, a letter "P" inside the little highlighted block next to the letters "TV"; the channel and number: CH3; then the dual symbols of a VCR tape with the DVD symbol below that.

    Any thoughts, anyone?

If anyone can assist please e-mail at boogieman9_99_1999@yahoo.com

    Thanks.

Dirty heads or the recording was from a different brand VCR and the Panasonic cant get the right tracking. Try manual tracking just a little in either direction to you get the right one.

SOURCE: Panasonic ES40v - Can't play DVD's - Incorrect region

I had the same trouble, also wouldn't play back discs that I recorded using it. The commonly listed reset of channel up and down at the same time was not meant for this model.
Below is the official solution that was sent to me by panasonic.
After using this method to reset my player it worked great. it was just like taking it out of the box for the first time.

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your inquiry, reguarding model DMR-ES40V.

Try this reset to fix the issue.

1. Unit power must be on.

2. Press [STOP] & [VHS > DVD] ON THE UNIT for over 5 seconds.

Thank you for contacting Panasonic.

SOURCE: EVERYTHING YOU NEED IS IN MY LETTER BELOW.

1. On your remote, find the record mode button; it is near the bottom on the left side. This button sets
the recording speed for the DVR. Faster recording speeds provide higher quality recordings.
2. Look at the display on the front of the machine: it should say XP ( records 1 hour on the disc,)
SP ( 2 hours, ) LP ( 4 hours, ) or EP ( 6 hours. ) You can also set it to record 8 hours on a disc,
but the quality of the recording will be poor.
3 Press the record mode button until the screen displays the recording speed that you want.
4 Note: if the powers fails or the Machine is unplugged, the machine will automatically reset itself to
SP mode.

Panasonic DMR ES40V Err message, DVD won't play or record

I had a similar ERR message and freaked out a bit for a week. Panasonic customer service was no help and suggested i send it in for VERY expensive repair. No way. After tons of additional research and trouble shooting I fixed my unit tonight. I downloaded the DMR-ES40 DVD Recorder Firmware Update from the Panasonic update and stored in on a CD. Put the cd in my dvd player following instructions from the website. My system is restored and works well again.
Why paid personnel at Panasonic could not tell me this is beyond my understanding.
Try updating you firmware as I did. Hope you get the same success. -Tamara
