When you first start up your computer or reinstall the software and restart, the computer asks you to disable the built in recording software to be able to use the Toshiba Disc Utility in full.
The recommended option is to just use the Toshiba Disc Creator utility itself. I use it and it is really easy to use.
It is located at Start->All Programs->TOSHIBA->CD&DVD Applications->Disc Creator.

That is the best option

DVDs do not need any driver to work, you need to have the dvd drive fixed or replaced.

Try first insterting a bootable disk, like your laptop recovery disk, or a windows install disk, then restart the computer so that it will read the disk before starting from hard disk.

If the laptop successfully read from recovery CD and start booting, then it is a system problem, in this case reinstall the system from recovery CD after saving all your software and files.

If the laptop does not boot from CD, the unit is faulty, replace the DVD RW.

I'm using lenovo y500 series 4EQ laptop/vista home basic.however my DVD drive (matshita DVD-RAM-UJ-85JS) doesnt recognize dvds, blank DVDs in certain but it recognizes cds that came with the service pack

It may be necessary to upgrade the "firmware" (software residing inside the DVD unit) to recognize the "newest" of blank DVD media.

Each "blank" disk has an identifier electronically written onto the disk -- if the firmware does not recognize that identifier, it needs to be upgraded in order to recognize it.

Check Toshiba's "support" web-site for a firmware update.

After i try to find the registry (which is not available)
Why not give this a try:
  1. Start your computer after SHUTDOWN
  2. After your DESKTOP appear on the screen for about 10 second, QUICKLY INSERT ANY CD/DVD (in my case I insert Glee)
  3. Let the computer run for a while, don't do anything until it settle down
  4. Check at MY COMPUTER whether your cd is detected
  5. I got mine work this way!. Good Luck my friends!

DVD ram not recognizing dvds/matshita DVD-RAM-UJ-85JS.

I too had the same problem, just take the DVD case out by unscrewing it from the bottom, then open the DVD case and jently clean the lens with a warm cloth. Put it back in and start your computer. It will work well.
