95 nissan quest - strong smell of exhaust in the cabin area

I have a 95 nissan quest. When the engine is started there is a smell of exhaust inside the cabin area. The smell is coming through the vents. When the van is moving and the heater is turned on the smell is really strong. How can I solve this problem?

Do you have an audible exhaust leak? These engines were known to have exhaust leaks.

The exhaust leak is almost always broken studs on the exhaust manifolds. It makes a tick noise when cold and usually goes away when the engine warms up. After a year or so, the noise doesn't go away.

Your heater-a/c air intake is at the base of the windshield through the screen on the passenger side. WHen the exhaust leaks from the manifold, the exhaust gas gets sucked into the air intake.
You can put the heater in recirc mode and it will draw air in from inside the car instead of though the outside air intake. You can't leave it in recirc for long in winter or your car will get ice or fogging on the windows from too much humidity. Take it off recirc after 10 minutes.

Fuel / Carbon fumes inside cabin

You need to repair the exhaust/manifold leak. Possibly a blown gasket.

Burning smell inside car. Not under hood. What could it be?

I had the same problem with my 2005 Honda Accord. I would happen only sometime but is a distant odor I smell from inside the cabin. Older Hondas sometimes have gasket problems that leak small amounts of oil onto the exhaust manifold. Ask the mechanic to go check the valve cover gaskets. They replaced a new gasket to my car at the Honda dealer and I haven't smelled that burning odor since then. Good luck.

2001 Subaru Outback has super strong exhaust smell coming into the cabin. I also see a small hole in the muffler. Could the hole be causing exhaust to come in through the vents or is it something else...

Its possible, but usually what you smell inside the cabin is coming in thru the fresh air intake in front of the windshield. The source is usually in the engine compartment.

I have a 2004 cadillac cts 3.6 v6 I have a strong smell inside the cabin the smell is like an exaust smell but at the same time sweet. I do have check engine light with obd code p0430 only. No other code...

You have a rich fuel mixture that ruined the exhaust converter

Google the PO430 code

The smell may be a coolant leak on the exhaust

1997 Villager gas smell when outside temperatures are hot and vehicle has been driven.

A common problem with Nissan products, which this van is a Nissan Quest with Mercury trim.
There are several small rubber fuel hoses around the intake. When the air temp is cold these hoses can leak and then stop leaking when the air temp warms up.
When the air temp is cold, look around the intake with the engine running and you should see one of the hoses wet with fuel.
Just tighten the clamp.

Strong fuel smell in cabin. 2005 Nissan. 2005 Quest. Any solutions?

Well first if you smell gasoline don't start the vehicle, check the entire fuel system locate the filter and check for leaking, also this vehicle uses a cabin filter to filter incoming air to the passenger compartment, locate this filter and replace it. there located sometimes behind the glove box door, or under the front cowling under the hood, in that space just under the wipers, If you can't find the solution and the smell persists, you need professional help ( with the car)

95 Nissan Maxima with fuel injection issue.

Could be battery, starter or coolant sensor.

It is hard to understand / get across engine noises with words so difficult to diagnose over the net but try to push start the car and let me know if it starts ok with a push. Also, maybe try a jump start, preferably using a circuit protector if you have one.
Let me know results of the above.
