After a couple of minutes viewing the screen is almost covered by a large black square which blocks out videio content. Audio is unblocked. When in any set up mode square does not block video. Could it have to do with v-chip. Have tried turning this feature off to no avail.
On a few channels a black rectangular block about half of the screeen size appears.

Re: large black square blocks screen
Most likely it's the closed captioning has been turned on. From your post I assume you have the remote control and able to access the menus so try to turn off the closed captioning. I'll be notified if you post something new.

I work at at a school, and we had the same problem. Turns out, it a Closed Captioning problem.
We found the manual, and it states that "If a large black box covers 80% of your screen, the Text mode is probably set. Press 'Closed Caption' to turn it off." The "Closed Caption" button is on the remote. If you don't have the remote (as in our case), you can go to "Closed Caption" in the menu, and pick something like C4 and T4. That stopped the black box for us.
The text mode in the closed caption is turned on.Turn off the closed caption.
I don't have the schematic in front of me, so, I will wing it.
There may be a button on the remote that says CC, if so then use that button to turn it off, if not then go to the service menu and you may have to search a bit.
Either way it's an easy fix and you can do it yourself.
If you can't find it, then, reply and I will give better instructions when I get into my shop next week.
