I purchased a Magellan Maestro 3100 GPS 4 years ago and I want to upgrade it. I also have a USB connector cable to download the updates but I don't know the proper procedures. Can you direct me to a...

hi, any and all updates for your 3100 can be found HERE ...if you decide to get the 2.18 firmware (which i recommend) because it adds Alaska, PR and Hawaii maps to your 3100 and fixes some major bugs, but beware, the firmware update for the 3100 is very large and can take up to 45 minutes to install and can NOT be interrupted, if it is, it will render the 3100 inoperable, so follow the directions to the letter.

read the instructions carefully

keep in mind, if your gps dies while updating, it will be not be usable...if the power goes out to the computer in stalling the update, the unit will not be usable.

im not trying to scare you, but i buy these all the time where someone has tried to update their 3100 and either the battery died or they unplugged it before the update was finished ect ect.

its actually very easy but magellan doesn't give enough warnings as to what can go wrong if your gps dies or your computer restarts ect ect ect.

Blue Screen with a black progress bar

i asked yesterday what for error message were you getting, but you havent replied so maybe you missed it. the dos box you are refering to is part of the update process for the 3100. run the update again and be patient, this update is huge and takes about 30-45 minutes to not remove usb cable untill directed to do so then the unit will reboot numerous times to install the update. do not attempt to touch the gps until you see the screen with the time zone. if that fail hopefully you copied the files before you tried to update it. if the update fails again, let me know and ill show you how to restore your 3100

Touch Screen

You probably just need to reset it.
Magellan Maestro models- the location of reset button is on the left, right, or bottom side inside a small hole. Use an object to apply pressure to depress the reset button. Also try holding the power button down for up to 10 seconds to power the unit off and again holding the power button down for up to 10 seconds to power the unit on.
You may need to update your firmware. Go to this site
select your product family, model, and then press the submit button. Firmware updates are located in the updates/upgrade section.

This should solve the problem. Good luck. If this helps, plz rate it fixa. Thank you kindly.

You have corrupted files on your GPS. Borrow one from a friend and copy the files onto yours. Then you can try the upgrade again. Let me know if that doesn't work.

go to Tech support at tell them what has transpired and ask for 2.18 Update Recovery Files. This fixed my problem. Took a few email exchanges but I thought the responses were very quick.

Magellan Maestro 3100 stuck on

If you followed the procedure closely, you now have an SD card with your backup on it. The backup consists of two folders: BACKUP, and USBTRANS. Insert the backup SD card in your PC's reader slot and open a "file explorer" aka "Windows Explorer", not to be confused with "Internet Explorer". You will use Windows Explorer to click and drag the USBRANS folder to the Maestro.

With the Maestro 3100 connected to the PC, a couple of Explorer folders will open and you can see the file structure for the GPS in 1, and in the other one a separate file structure for the blank SD card needed for the update. Look at the file structure for the GPS and you should see a handful of folders including "SYS".

  • Start the upgrade program, following the procedures.
  • Click the NEXT button at the bottom of the procedures screen.
  • Immediately copy the backed up USBTRANS folder (and all contents) to the SYS folder on the GPS.
  • The update should now find the Maestro 3100 and proceed with the update.

SUMMARY: copy USBTRANS (it should contain 1 file: UNIT.DAT)
  • from your BACKUP SD card (not the one in the Maestro)
  • to your Maestro 3100's SYS folder.

Magellan Maestro 3100 locks

You can try a hard reset. Hold in the reset button (left side of unit, use a pin or toothpick), while turning on the unit. If you don't get the blue Magellan screen, you'll have to try again. If you get a screen with a blue background and a menu, turn it off and try again.
So far, this has fixed:
1. unit won't go on
2. unit reboots when routing
3. unit turns off after a few seconds

At least, it's fixed it for me. No idea why this happens, but it's pretty damn annoying. Give it a try.
