Yes, it's compatible with the motherboard, no, it's not compatible with the XP install disk because it doesn't have SATA support. And since Asus doesn't provides it special driver needed (one that must be put on a floppy) it means that you simply cannot install XP on this disk.
All you can do is to obtain another PATA hdd what ever its size and install XP in it. Then put the new SATA disk in and use it to store all the installed programs and all your files on it. As a bonus you won't lose them if the new PATA disk fails or XP gets corrupted. Or install Vista or 7 instead of XP, the have support for SATA disks
Hi, Thanks for the details. I have used K8V-MX Asus motherboard and found it very reliable with quite reasonable performance. It definately supports 500 GB Sata drive and there must not be any issues after increasing just the storage. However, Operating System upgrade may result in sluggish performance. Drivers dont seem to be an issue to me either. I suggest to review a few points detailed as under: - - K8V-MX Asus Supports RAID, so, check for any RAID Drivers/ settings. (You dont have to use RAID for two Hard Drives of different make, capacity and speed). Try using one disk at a time having same Operating System (e.g. Windows XP) and compare the performance. - Infact SATA Drives have better data transfer rate than IDE, which results in enhanced performance. - Some Programs (that you may not be using with 80GB drive) Like antivirus may result in decreased performance. - Please Review you Operating System environment and software installed. Make sure that the new drive & Operating System are free of any virus, which results in CPU Utilization upto 100%. - Also, motherboard supports Max 2GB RAM, so you may consider adding more RAM.

Hi araamudhan12, Its your choice. The motherboard will function with either size hard disk drives. The 160BG drive will store more information than you might think. So the question you'll need to ask your self is, do you really think you'll come close to filling up a 500GB hard disk drive. Most users install two drives. One as the primary & the second as an extra storage drive & to back up the primary drives data in case the primary has a problem. When looking for a hard disk drive, go with the drive or drives with the longest warranty. When installing a new drive & the new drive will be your primary drive. Disconnect the 40GB drive. Allow windows to format the drive & install windows from scratch. Once windows is installed & completely updated you can re-connect the 40GB drive & copy all your personal data back to the new hard disk drive. When your sure all the data from the 40GB drive has been copied over. Install another 160GB drive as your back up drive / storage drive. Keep the 40GB drive just in case you missed data that you though you did not need. The Asus P4BP-MX motherboard can run, two Ultra DMA 100MHz hard disk drives.
this hard drive size will work with your motherboard but the problem is the size will be detected only up to 130 GB or less, so if you will be using that size of hard drive you will just waste it.. so better use a 120 GB of hard drive or upgrade your motherboard so you can use a 250 GB.....
