Question about PC Desktops

Hi I have a Toshiba satel1ite P300 and all of a sudden the 4 USB ports have decided to stop working. If I reset the notebook they will work for a few minutes and then stop working again, I also need to do a cold restart as it is freezing. Can anyone help me out with some info?

    Windows xp service pack 3

The notebook is only a few months old, it came with Vista installed but it also came with the XP SP3 so you could downgrade if you wanted to, so we did because I didn't like the vista.

Apart from the windows updates which we set to be automatic, we didn't really install anything really, maybe adobe acrobat but that's about it.

    Thanks

Yeah, when we called Toshiba they basically told us we will need to do a recovery as it could be the microsoft updates that have caused it. We are trying to avoid having to rebuild but its looking like it might be the only way.... I went into the problem devices and there is nothing there?

Did you do a clean install? What i mean is format the hard drive and start from scratch. Because i'm not really satisfied with their updates. Because they force you to use some of them in order to put some programs on your computer.I have XP pro pn mine and i have never downloaded any of those security updates on mine. I have never had a problem. Go to start then go to accesories thensysten tools then system information. when you get there go to componets then click on problem devices and tell me what is there.

You can shut off updates go to control panel choose classic view on the top left side then go to system when it comes up choose auto updates then you can turn them off.
I hope everything goes well on what ever you decide to do. I do know you chose the right operating system. ;-)
God Bless You Greg

The pins on the USB cord seems to be a bit twisted

Hi

you may need to replace the usb cord but be careful you dont damage your usb ports.

another option for you is to buy a hub which plugs into to your usb port and provided 2 or more usb ports for you to use.

this will help stop and damage to your laptop ports

cheers

Both the USB ports on my 19" DELL monitor have suddenly stopped working. The DELL Optiplex 210L system was purchased direct from Dell 4 years ago. How do I troubleshoot?

Make sure the USB connector to your computer is properly connected before startup. Do you connect your monitor with both a VGA and USB cables? Check your USB connection and then try replacing the USB cord to start with the proces of elimination. Don't forget to rate this answer if it helped fix your problem. Incidentally, anything less that 4 thumbs up is basicaly a negative rating and I don't think people seeking help are aware of that.

Best Audio Jack/Output socket

In the back of your computer there should be a light green colored port that looks like a headphone jack, but If you could tell me the model of speakers you have I might be able to better assist you, but that green port is a generic speaker port.

I have an inspiron laptop. the two USB on the side stopped working all of a sudden however when I checked the computer stated that they are working fine

may i know what device was connected to those ports?try connecting a mouse to the same ports and see whether it is detected. If it works well and fine.Other wise goto Control panel>>System>>Device manager>>Universal Serial Bus Controllers>>Here, delete all the USB Root hubs.If you are removing them using a mouse connected, then u might lose the mouse response after u delete the USB Root hubs. Please note this.Restart the system after deleting all the Root hubs and wait for a few seconds for them to get installed back.Restart again and confirm whether the issue is resolved

Gateway USB ports stopped working

So maybe you need to install the drivers for the USB device you are trying to connect. Also, with the computer off, try cleaning all USB ports and plugs. You can buy electrical cleaner in a spray can at Radio Shack. Let it dry thoroughly before powering up. But to me it sounds like a driver problem. Unless maybe your USB BUS is going bad.

My Toshiba laptop all of a sudden is asking for a BIOS password. I never enable that feature and all the backdoor passwords does not work. I did everything short of flashing the BIOS. I was wondering if...

woops - sounds like someone put a mischievous password in there - sadly to remove a password from a toshiba requires a special 'dongle' to be placed in the serial port - even reflashing may not remove it.Most toshiba service centres will remove this for you on providing proof of ownership - otherwise do a quick search on ebay for the dongle..

My usb mouse has suddenly stopped working

Your USB ports may have become dissabled by accident
got to your system bios and see if your USB ports are enabled

If your USB ports are enabled check to see that they have an IRQ assigned to them.

if your USB ports are enabled and have an IRQ assigned to them check to see that

"Legacy USB support" is enabled.

reboot.

if the mouse still does not work , you may have dammaged USB ports , or simply a defective mouse.
