Wep encryption on WGR614 router

I have managed to setup a wireless connection for my new laptop. When I look at the encryption details it says that it is 'WPA-PSK'.
A work colleague of mine suggested I should change to WEP as this is more secure.

Should I change to WEP encrytion, and how do I do it ?

WPA is more secure, Your colleage is obviously uninformed when it comes to this. Do your own research if you don't believe us. I am a network administrator, the guy above me is correct, WEP is older and stands for Wired ( notice it says WIRED) Encryption Protocol, WPA is designed for wireless encryption and stands for Wi-Fi Protected Access.

No, WPA is more secure than WEP. Whoever told you that is wrong, its the other way round.

WEP is an older technology of encryption. Some older wireless devices won't work with WPA, but will with WEP. If all you devices can use WPA - then stick with that.

Security key to router

Thesecurity/encryption key secures your data from unauthorized access. The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router'swireless settings configured ie SSID, WPA or WPA2 encryption key and also thewireless cards in all the laptops and or computers needs to be configured withthese router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers can communicatewith your wireless router.

How do we find the WEP key for my WGR614v9

Configuring WEP:
  1. Use an ethernet cable to connect a computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the NETGEAR router.
  2. In a web browser, enter the router's IP address - either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 by default.
  3. When prompted for a Username and Password, enter the default username and password (admin; password) unless you have already changed it. NETGEAR recommends changing the default password to increase the security of your network.
  4. Select Wireless Settings from the Setup menu in the left-hand navigation bar. n101675_image001.jpg
  5. Under Security Options, select WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).
  6. From Security Encryption (WEP) > Authentication Type, select Automatic.
  7. From Security Encryption (WEP) > Encryption Strength, select 64-bit or 128-bit. NOTE: You will need to configure your wireless computers with the same setting.
  8. From Security Encryption (WEP) Key, select Key 1 and enter a key.
    • Note: WEP keys are entered in hexadecimal digits, which are any combination of 0-9, A-F.
      • If you selected 64-bit under Security Encryption (WEP) > Encryption Strength, then enter 10 hexadecimal digits for your key.
      • If you selected 128-bit under Security Encryption (WEP) > Encryption Strength, then enter 26 hexadecimal digits for your key.
    • SAVE or KEEP NOTE of these values - they will be required to connect wirelessly to your network.
  9. Click Apply to save the settings.

I need my wep key

The WEP encryption key (network key) is in your wireless router, without this key the wireless router won't allow the computer or laptop to connect to this wireless router.
I recommend you use WPA or WPA2 encryption, it is much stronger than WEP.
The WEP, WPA, WPA2 encryption key is in your router's wireless settings. Log into your router and got to the wireless settings, you will need to get the SSID and the encryption key. Then go to your computer or laptop's wireless card and configure it with the router's SSID and encryption key, so it will then connect to the wireless router and the Internet.

Wep key

The WEP encryption key is configured in the wireless settings of the Netgear wireless router. For a stronger and later encryption method I suggest you use WPA2 or WPA, provided the wireless card in the computer/laptop supports WPA2 or WPA.

Problems connecting my laptop to wireless router

Make sure that you do the setup via cable, not through wireless!
If you change form WPA to WEP, the length of the key changes and you will have to provide this new key if you want to connect wireless to your router.
You can leave your laptop connected via cable and check if your wireless card can connect.
No, you don't have to reinstall everything again. Just plug in the cable, connect to your router (192.168.x.x) and check your wireless setup.
