Question about HP Compaq nx9010

1 Answer

Screen Problem... I have a HP Compaq nx9010 Notebook and from time to time the screen gives me problems: the screen gets divided horizontally with the bottom half "frosting"... in other words it fades to blank but in a off-white color, I then have to adjust the screen a few times before it returns to normal again, also, this problem occurs when the screen is bumped or adjusted. Sometimes the top quoter of the screen does the same but at the same time flickers in random thin bars/stripes horizontally - again the screen needs to be adjusted in order for the screen to return to normal. I've also found that I need to hold the screen by the hinges while adjusting the screen to get it to return to normal. the last bit of this problem is when it boots, the screen is gray with two thin vertical lines on the left hand side of the screen - one being red and one being green... this sometimes goes away when the O/S welcome screen appears but from time to time it stays and need to reboot a few times before the screen returns to normal.

I had a similar problem with one of my laptops, there is a ribbon cable that connections the LCD screen to the board inside the laptop case that gets a little loose. In my case it was a easy fix because the button panel on my laptop popped right out and I could take the end of a pencil and push the connector back down into the socket; not all laptops make it that easy for you. If you laptop is still under warranty I would make HP fix it; there is also a chance the LCD screen could be burning out.
If you're not squeamish about fixing it yourself my recommendation is do the work at your own risk. The only hard thing about taking apart a laptop is putting the each screw back in the original location; many laptops have more than 5 different sized screws holding it together. Furthermore, you don't need to dismantle the whole thing; worst case there are 2 - 4 screws that hold in the keyboard and 2 - 3 screws holding in the forward button panel. Near each screw hole is an indicator what it is for; on my laptop it shows the letter "K" to represent the keyboard screw holes. I'd usually stay away from taking out the screws from the 4 corners of the laptop...
If your keyboard has a trackball there is a mini ribbon that is fragile connected underneath, so after removing the keyboard screws be careful not to pull farther then the slack allows.
If you're lucky you won't have to monkey with any of this and the forward button panel will just pop out. Laptop designers are making it easier to "replace" laptop screens and keyboards because it is a common problem. I'm positive if you're able to secure that connector you won't have that "frosting" effect you see now.

If you have anymore questions just let me know...

lol ;) Much harder than with a pc.

But you need to remove the battery for it. I am afraid it would require taking the keyboard out.
