Question about Olympus DS-2 Digital Voice Recorder

Olympus DS-50 digital voice recorder hangs on startup

On startup my Olympus DS-50 goes through the system check, displays the Olympus logo and then continues to show a hourglass only and hangs . It does not go to the operating menu. The only way to get it out of this state is to remove the battery.

Already left it without batteries for days. As soon as I reinstall new batteries, the same problem persists. Have two separate recorders displaying the same problem

  • pretoras Nov 27, 2008

My Guess is that it could be some sort of data corruption which could impact the firmware. The problem with the suggested firmware replacement option is that, while displaying the hourglass sign, it does communicate with the USB port. The fact tht it affects two machines seems to exclude hardware failures. Could it possibly be a virus infection?

  • pretoras Nov 27, 2008

I wonder - Is there a way that you can completely flush the current firmware memory and reinstall new firmware?

  • pretoras Nov 27, 2008

    Please experts - Read carefully!!
    1. The unit switches on.
    2. It displays flashing "system check"
    3. It then proceeds to display the Olympus logo.
    4. It then continuously displays the battery icon and a tumbling hourglass and does not proceed to the operational display. I therefore cannot access the FORMAT menu.
    5. While displaying the tumblig hourglass it does not communicate with the USB port on my computer - The fromwatre update program can therefore not see the unit to update the firmware.
    6. I have two units in the office that shows the same symptoms, so hardware failure is highly unlikely.

  • pretoras Nov 27, 2008

Not many Olympus technicians around in Africa.

  • pretoras Nov 27, 2008

Could not find a reset button on this machine, even after opening it up.

  • pretoras Nov 27, 2008

The reason I was thinking of possible virus infection is that my computer at work was infected by the Setup.exe Trojan horse BackDoor.Generic9.EGI and New Folder.exe Virus found Win32/Bacalid viruses. It seems that these viruses are spread by being written to flashdisks when inserting and transmitting to another computer when insertred there.

Now, the memory area of the Olympus DS-50 is nothing more than a flasdisk which is fat32 formated. These viruses can possibly be written to the DS-50 in the same way that it is written to any other flasdisk

  • pretoras Nov 27, 2008

All noble efforts gurus - thank you - but no luck yet. I am reasonably adept at operating and fault finding on these machines, but this problem has got me stomped and it also seems that you gurus are stomped.

As for now- I seem to have two rather expensive Olympus paper weights.

  • pretoras Nov 27, 2008

No, Never tried to fromat via the computer.

  • pretoras Nov 28, 2008

Altough there was nat a single solution that could resolve the problem, I am still very appreciative of the effort by the Gurus. I think it must now be accepted that the Olympus DS-30, DS-40 and DS-50 range of recorders suffers from an inherent deficiency in that, under specific conditions, its firmware can become corrupted which causes it to hang forever. There is no escape from this. I now have two expensive paper weights.

"Have two separate recorders displaying the same problem"

If these are all the same brand its the manufactures issue for making a faulty product just return it and buy from a different manufacturer and this issue will be gone.

the virus referred can only operate under the target operating system, the camera has it's own and in no way similar to let's say windows.

possible that the camera's system is being halted due to it cannot read or understand the information stored in the memory, maybe, not 100% sure as we don't know how it works.

try hooking the camera on a computer with a different operating system (worth a try since repair shop is quite far).

Correct, it is not a hardware issue, but a firmware issue. since it cannot be accessed by the computer via USB and nothing can be done on the unit itself, calling up a service center is the only way left to get the units fixed.

First ensure that the recorder is not on hold, this will cause same problem.

Then try performing a full hard reset , by unplugging all cables and removing batteries at same time for ten minutes.

If this does not work you can fix it with a format:

4.6 Formatting the recorder (Format)

If you format the recorder, all files will be removed and all function settings will return to defaults except date and time settings. Transfer any important files to a computer before formatting the recorder.

If the recorder is formatted, data for guidance, alarm playback, and starting/closing tune when the power is turned On/Off will also be erased and these features will not be available in the future. If you erase data by mistake, connect the recorder to a computer and use DSS Player to copy it to the recorder (chapter 9).

(1) While the recorder is stopped, press the Menu (centre) button for 1 second or longer. You will hear two very fast bleeps.
- The menu opens (chapter 6).
(2) Press the plus or minus (up or down) button to choose “Format”.
(3) Press the OK (centre) or right button.
- The “Cancel” indicator flashes.
(4) Press the plus button to choose “Start”.
(5) Press the OK button.
- After the “Data Will Be Cleared” message is on for two seconds, “Cancel” will turn on.
(6) Press the plus button again to choose “Start”.
(7) Press the OK button.
- Formatting begins and an indicator flashes on the display.
- “Format Done” displays when formatting ends.

Notes
• Never turn the power off or remove batteries during formatting because data may be corrupted. It may take over 10 seconds to complete erasing.
• Never format the recorder from a PC.
• After formatting, recorded audio file names may start from 0001.
• Once the recorder is formatted, the music files with DRM may not be transferred to the recorder again.
• When the recorder is formatted, all the saved data, including locked files and read-only files, are erased.

This is not a virus infection, there is no virus designed to infect this kind of device.

Even if you copy a virus into the memory card, this will only spread through other computer, and do not affect the recorder, as this does not have a Windows based OS.

You need to format the recorder following the method descripted above. You still did not do this.

If you format the recorder using a computer you may damage it.

Do the format procedure I gave you.

    Read the manual.

Eventually come back with the result.

I am not stomped. The main problem I get on Fixya is when an user thinks that he already knows what the problem is, and does not read or follow instruction given with the necessary care.

Perform a full reset procedure FOLLOWING the instructions on the user manual, that are the same I posted before:

    4.6 Formatting the recorder (Format)

The problem is not a virus, if you tried formatting through the computer you may have damaged the recorder built in software.

Let see if I can fix this then,

Did you try the Menu (centre) button for 1 second or longer?

Did you ever attempt formatting the recorder from PC?

what about pressing the Menu (centre) button for 5 or 6 seconds, dird you try this?

  • Ginko
    Ginko Nov 27, 2008

dird you try holding down the Menu (centre) button for 5 or 6 seconds?

this should start the service menu even when the unit system is faulty, then from there you should be able to proceed to formatting option.

As you said, DS-50 doesn't communicate through USB so firmware update is not possible. Please contact Olympus Service to resolve this complicated issue.
Virus just affect Windows only as virus intentionally made to disturb Windows software and not the firmware of products like DS-50 etc.

Correct, but trojan horse virus can not affect DS-50 firmware because above said virus made for Windows only. Flash memory is just carrier of these viruses.
You can clean DS-50 flash memory by any updated anti-virus software.

i think that the software is corrupt and you need to plug it to a pc to update it if you can, here is the user manual with instructions on how to do this:

    http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/2590_m...

just choose your model and click start download, if all this doesn't work and because it is an expensive camera you may be better off taking it to be repaired

You can try to format the recorder.

    This process will:

    • All function settings will return to their defaults.
All files stored in the recorder will be deleted.

    • If you have important files that you want to save, connect the recorder to a computer and transfer those files from the recorder to the computer before formatting the device.

Follow thisfew STEPS to format the unit.

    1 Press the MENU button.
2 Press the FF or REW button to choose "FORMAT".
3 When the PLAY button is pressed, "NO" is displayed.
4 Press FF or REW to select "YES", and press the
    PLAY button.
After "ARE YOU SURE" is displayed, "NO" will be displayed.
5 Press FF or REW to select "YES", and press the
PLAY button. "DONE" displays when formatting ends.
It may take up to several tens of seconds to finish the initialization. Do not remove the battery or detach the battery compartment from the recorder during that time. Otherwise data may be damaged. Never format the recorder from a PC.
When the recorder is formatted, all the stored data, including locked files, are erased

The recorder should be formatted only by using the internal FORMAT function found in the Menu. The slide switch on my Olympus DS-4000 digital dictation recorder is too sensitive, and often goes to the "Record" position when it should be "Off." Any suggestions in how to correct...

The slide switch on your Olympus DS-4000 probably needs to be replaced. You can ship it to PCDictate.com to have your Olympus DS-4000 repaired. The repair will most likely run around $100,

However, my suggestion is that you upgrade to the Olympus DS-5000 digital voice recorder, the replacement for the DS-4000. It is a substantial upgrade and you will not regret it.

If you want to consider another brand, Philips has some great digital voice recorders. My favorite models are the Philips LFH-9600 and Philips LFH-9500 professional digital voice recorder.

The best place to purchase professional digital voice recorders is PCDictate.com. Your recorder will be shipped the same day your order and shipping is free.
