Usually the video is retrievable when finalized. I don't think it's possible to reintalize a disc if video was already burned to it.

How do you delete videos from your sony handycam DCR-DVD405

This Sony camcorder uses mini-DVDs to record and there are certain restrictions when DVD is used, it is not like videotape. For a DVD-R disc, you cannot delete video once it is recorded because this type of disc is a record once only. Depending on which other disc type you use and how it was initialized, you MAY be able to delete video. For a DVD+RW disc, or a DVD-RW disc initialized in VIDEO mode, you can delete the last scene IF you have not removed the disc and not recorded any new video. For a DVD-RW disc initialized in VR mode, you can delete anytime. And here is how:
Turn on camcorder and press PLAY. Select the video or still image tab that contains the data you want to delete. Touch EDIT. Touch DELETE. Select what you want deleted. The selected scene is marked with a checkmark. Press and hold the image on the LCD screen to confirm. Touch RETURN to go back to previous screen. Touch OK - YES. You cannot recover data once deleted. There is also a DELETE ALL to delete all video or images.

For someone who has little knowledge on computer like me, I usually prefer to getting help with some pro programs, such as asoftech data recovery program.
or u can visit Try free data recovery software to view deleted files where I find many guides in detail there.
Hope it can help u. Good luck.

Can you initialize a DVD-RW after you have recorded on it?

hi its geoff
yes you can. i dose say that no more recording can be done after the disc is finalized (thats true, you first have to unfinalize the cd to write more files on it.but you can initialize the disk at any time but you lose the recorded content(it frormats the disk) then you can use the disk over and over again. remember finalizing and unfinalizing requires you to plug the mains charger into the camcorder it assumes theres not enough power in the battery to do the job and will need the mains every time.but initializing only requires sufficient battery power .

Sony DCR DVD108 not finalizing disc, lost data

I noticed that too with my "VR" (and NOT "Video") formatted disks. I don't think you can finalize the VR ones. Instead you have to use the Sony Import tool to grab the videos. If you are like me you probably remember using the import tool with Video formatted disks BEFORE finalizing them and it takes forever to copy them. They must be finalized to view on other devices, copy using the import tool quicker, etc., but VR formatted disks seem optimized for importing (and can be edited on the camcorder directly.

I accidently reformated a DVD-RW, can i get the information back?

calciummanda,
It may still able to retrieve, depending on how many times it has been recorded over. There are some good disc recovery software utilities out there now that you can load on your computer an then get the image back from the disc. It's not a guarantee that you can get it all or even some of it. Regular formatting does remove the data but the image on the disc is harder to remove, that's why the bad guys usually get their computers and discs confiscated because no matter how many times they erase their hard drives or Rewrite over the discs they can get the original image back (evidence) now you and I and the rest of the public only have access to less powerful recovery software. try this site: http://www.octanesoft.com/cd_dvd_data_recovery.html there are others like it so search for ; DVD recovery software.

DZ-MV730A Cam - unable to finalize, locks up creating thumbnails

Sorry this isn't the ultimate solution especially if the disc is full - I'm still trying to retrieve data from a disc that locks up creating thumbnails although it will play on the camcorder to a point. If there is room left on the disc, try recording briefly then press disc navigation button. A couple of times I was able to get past the lockup this way.

Disc Error

If you don't mind paying out some money, data recovery experts can possibly retrieve the data. You may want to try doing it yourself though because at least you know you won't damage the actual disk. Who knows what will happen to it after it has left your possesion.
