Compressor fan spins at low speed

My AC compressor fan stopped spinning and upon opening the unit, I found the capacitor had blown. I replaced it, but now the fan only spins at low speeds and the compressor doesn't turn on at all. The contactor is getting 26 volts and moves freely, but it only seems to be sending out 120 volts. The compressor and fan motor are 208/230 volts. Is it possible the contactor is bad and the voltage is not high enough to run the fan at a normal speed and turn on the compressor? Or is it likely the fan motor that is bad? Also, the fan motor will spin even if the thermostat is set to off. The only way to get it to stop is to remove the disconnect.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

I have some new information to add. If I measure the voltage across the circuit breakers for the AC, I get 120V individually and 240V across both. When I measure at the disconnect, I get 120V on one side and less than 50V one the other. So, now it sounds more like a wiring issue. This problem might be a bit out of my league as I've never attempted wiring before. Should I call an electrician?

The contactor is a power passing device.Even though it is closing, it is possible its not passing the required voltage to operate other power consuming components such as the compressor and fan.Being exposed to the elements it's common for the contactor to go bad. They are fairly inexpensive and I would start by replacing it first before accusing any other component.

Yes!, At this point I would recommend an electrician only because you stated you have never attempted wiring and I assume any electrical inspection, troubleshooting or repairs. You are dealing with high voltage which as you know is very dangerous.Good Luck!

Let me add that it might be as simple as a loose or corroded electrical connection to the disconnect, but once again I recommend a qualified electrician investigate.

SOURCE: RV air conditioner. Compressor running, fan stops before cool

The fan motor is getting hot and going off on the internal overload in the motor.
This is caused by either a low voltage, a bad capacitor, or tight or dry bearings in the motor.
To check the bearings turn the power off to the unit, then spin the fan blade if it spins freely then the bearings are ok.
To check the capacitor you will need some kind of tester or you can buy a capacitor and replace it, that's what a lot of people do. They usually don't cost very much.
To check the voltage you will need a voltmeter and measure the volts at the unit.

SOURCE: home ac compressor fan won't turn all the time.

your looking at $175-$225 for just the single phase motor depending where you purchase, I just replaced mine(identical unit) due to screaming dry bearings, if you replace it your self make sure to keep new wires tight along side of unit or fan will cut them if loose and its a fan- 5mfd/25mfd compressor@440volt cap

How to repair overload malfunction window AC unit ?

Window AC units normally have two motors. One motor spins both the inside and outside fans. This motor may be PSC (permanent split capacitor) with a run-capacitor. Test the capacitor or just replace it if it is old and you don't have test meter(s). The other motor is inside the sealed compressor unit. This will be overheating if the first motor was not running at full speed due to a failing run capacitor. The thermal check will auto-reset but the compressor motor most likely cannot start until it is cooled completely down by being turned off for an hour or more. There is also a run capacitor on the compressor motor. Test and/or replace. If this does not correct the problem I do not recommend further repairs as most window units are cheaper to replace -- labor will be high on changing a compressor, fan motor, or coils and expansion valves.

I have omitted advise about cleaning coils and fans and filters, but if you find a lot of dirty build-up then clean those first before moving on to motor issues.

I have an Amana heater/airconditioner (Prestige I think) that is not cooling. The outside compressor fan was not spinning, so i I changed the capacitor on the unit. It now spins, yet vent air not cold

If that fan stopped your compressor overheated, shut off on thermal overload. Carefully cool compressor with water hose and restart. If the big copper is cold ,small copper warm, compressor is running. Check capacitor on compressor

Goodman heatpump fan runs, condenser wont start

Either the condenser fan has bad bearings, or it has a defective fan capacitor.
Turn off the breaker to the outside unit.
Spin the fan blade by hand.
If the fan blade spins easily and will spin a few revolutions with no problem the fan bearings are good.
If not, replace the fan motor due to bad bearings.
I am pretty sure you fan motor is bad because with a bad capacitor the fan motor will not get up to speed and may just sit and overheat.
I'm leaning toward a bad fan motor.

You need to replace the fan capacitor. Your compressor is probably in thermal overload you can cure this by turning off the disconnect your ac voltage and taking a cool water hose and running over the top of the compressor for a while. Then turn your disconnect back on and listen and feel of the big copper line to see if it gets cold and also listen to see if the compressor kicks on.

The compressor fan does not spin and sometimes it spins backwards

Your capacitor is definitely the culprit here.
It should be a dual capacitor. Meaning it has 3 terminals on one capacitor. "C" "H" and "F" would be the markings for power in,"C" out to fan "F" and out to compressor "H".
It also has a mfd(microfarad) value on the capacitor as well as a VAC rating of 370 or 440 volts ac. A 440 VAC can be used in place of a 370vac.
The other specs may be something like 40/5 or 35/5 or 40/7.5 etc.
The capacitor replacement should be exact as far as the microfarad rating is concerned.( eg. 40+5).
The money requested through various sites is just that....various. These dual caps may sell around 30-50 dollars for a quality capacitor. If you wish to spend the $118 I will sell you all as many as you would like.

Kenmore AC unit's fan won't blow at all

Shut the power off to the unit, spin the fan blade to see if it spins freely. If it doesn't spin freely, (there appears to be a little drag when you spin it),the bearings are bad, if it does spin freely, then try moving the motor shaft from side to side if there’s any play in the shaft side to side then the bearings are worn and motor needs replaced. Then, check the capacitor, if it’s bulging even slightly, the capacitor is bad and needs replaced. Most of the time people replace the capacitor if motor seems ok. If capacitor is ok, turn power on to see if the motor is getting the proper voltage, if it is and not trying to run, then the windings are probably open, the motor's bad and needs replaced.

Whirlpool portable AC, compressor works, but no exhaust fan

there are 3 possiblities
  1. something obstructing the lower fan motor (or exhaust motor)
  2. bad fan capacitor
  3. or bad motor
to check any of these you will need to disassemble the unit to get to the blower. there are several screws located at various points on the plastic housing covering the unit. Once removed you should be able to check for motor obstructions visually. for checking the motor and capacitor you will need a volt/ohm meter and ideally a capacitor checker. you could try to spin start the motor while it is powered up this could be a possible sign of a bad capacitor if it will start when you do this or if the motor will spin freely while powered down and will not spin start when powered up. I know that is kind of confusing but its how they work. GO FIGURE.  thanks Peyton
