My External USB 250hard drive shows error Drive is not accessible

Well I am using a 250GB external Hard Drive hooked up via USB from my Laptop XP machine and is working excellenty but yesterday while working the drive just stopped reading.

I unplugged it and I hook it back up to my machine.
G:\ is not accessible. the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

I ran a check disk and it fixed an error under xp. The drive letter shows up but the drive size shows 0kb.

How can I solve the problem

You most likely need to delete the partition on your external hard drive, then create a new one and format it again. You will lose the data on your external hard drive.
1. Go to the Control Panel, click on Administrative Tools, click on Computer Management, then Disk Management. (You will need Administrators rights to carry out the following tasks)
2. On the lower Right Panel select the External drive, this will be displayed as Disk 1, Right click on this drive (MAKE SURE YOU DON"T SELECT THE C: DRIVE which will be displayed as Disk 0)
and then Delete the partition.
3. This drive should then be Unallocated, Right Click on this drive and create a New Partition.
4. Then select Primary partition.
5. Check that the maxium disk size matches close to 240000(MB) you about 10+MB in the formating process
6. Click Assign the following drive letter (let the computer select this.
7. Chick Format the partition with the following settings
File System = NTFS
Allocatin unir size = Default
Volume label = "name of your choice eg. BACHUP DATA"
DON'T TICK Perform a quick format & Enable file & folder compression
8. Click Finish

REQUIRE WINDOWS 7 DRIVER FOR IOMEGA SILVER SERIES 250GB EXTERNAL HARD DISC DRIVE. THANK YOU

The external hard-drive is "plug-and-play", and Windows XP/Vista/7 all support "plug-and-play".
Thus, it should automatically be detected by Windows.

So, what's your "real" problem? Symptoms? Error-messages? What happens? What does not happen?

In XP Start > Control Panel > Administrative tools > Computer manager then on the left click disk managment, you will see your 250gb drive as drive0 most likly with partition C and beside it you should see unallocated space, you can right click this unallocated space and format it, then right click again and click make partition active.

SimpleTech 250GB External Hard Drive can't be recognized

First of all,

uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option in the device manager for USB Hub Properties, Power Management Tab.

Try rebooting the computer once as C:\Windows\inf\INFCACHE.1 file may be corrupted and need to be replaced (either restore a previous version or just delete it and try connecting again).

Next, completely uninstall all USB devices and the main hub and then re-install.

USB hard drive not recognized by Mac and by PC

Does the external drive work when connected to some _other_ computer? (Friend? Office? Home?)

It could be a failure either in the "hardware" inside the external-case (the USB adapter & interface)
or in the disk-drive "inside" the external-case.

So, a qualified technician can open the external drive, remove the disk-drive, and connect it directly to a computer, to see if the files can be "directly" read from the disk-drive.

If not, then you should search online for a "data recovery" service -- they are expensive, but they physically repair a damaged disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your data to another disk-drive.

Laptop Won't Recognize External HD

You can try opening the device manager in Window XP and uninstall the external hard disk (make sure you show unplugged devices).
Then replug the drive again, and it should reinstall the drivers.
