It will be best to load the computer with Win-7; rather than loading Win XP; as update support to Win XP is not in air since 5 months. Microsoft have stopped the update.
Load it with Windows-7 Ultimate. It is the best O/S.

You need to check if there any Boot Information in partition that is used by WinXP. In this situation best way is to reinstall Win7, and format all your partitions as you want in Win7 installations process.

I have a Win XP desktop that has a corrupt system file

If you know what file it is, you can try booting with a recovery disk - you can download the UBCD boot ISO for example - and copy it back.

Or, if you can enter at least Safe Mode, you can try running the SFC /SCANNOW command from the prompt.

Finally, ordinarily you can run a XP install on top of an existing installation without losing data. This is a last resort, though; some user personalization and info is bound to be lost.

Yahoo messenger

Sounds like a boot script. Yahoo Chat is a huge security risk to your machine and there isn't much you can do about it. The chat allows code to execute through the chat window to allow graphics and attachments to be seen and embedded during chat.

Personally, I use the java chat client for Yahoo or Trillian and they seem to be immune. But they have limited features too for that very reason. If all you do is chat though, its a safe compromise.
