Replacement of gas tank on a Sears GT3000 riding mower

I ordered a new gas tank for the mower, because there is a crack in the tank now, no leak yet. I haven't been able to work on it due to knee surgery. Would like to find out the easy and fastest way to replace the tank.

If theres no leak yet you can easily patch it with an epoxy puddy, available at your local auto parts store. i've used it myself on gas tanks, radiators, boats and its never failed me yet

Why is gas leaking out at bottom of the tank where tube connects to gas tank?

If you have already replaced the clamp and tightened. The tube itself could be cracked. Loosen and bend the tube and inspect closely to see if cracking or split opens up. If it does then replace the tube.
There could also be a crack/hole on or near the bottom tank connection. This can be difficult to locate but holding the hose barb on the bottom with a finger and pouring a little gas into the tank.
The hole/Crack should be easy to find. Vibration will sometimes cause a crack in this location. Typically I suspect the hose.
Today's gasoline is notorious for degrading gas lines due to the additives and ethanol from corn.
Good luck hope this helps

Is it common to have a cracked gas tank or is the gas coming from somewhere else?

The hose from the tank to the carburetor is the first place to look. Plastic tanks tend to leak at the seam but can crack anywhere.

Gas tank leak

The gas tank would go with the engine. Find the engine number (Briggs & Stratton?, Kohler? ) You can order it online from Briggs & Stratton parts, or like Jack's small engine, or your local mower parts supply. Common poblem with these plastic tanks.

The mower is leaking gas badly right under the gas tank. would it be the acatual gas tank or the hoses or how is it best to locate the problem.

Take off the gas tank, empty it and with an air compresser, blow the air through where the hose was on, while covering the other hole with the palm of your hand. If it "pops out" theres no crack in the tank. Try replacing the hose. If you hear air blowing, replace gas tank.
