Hi its called "hunting" and is caused by a fuel block in the main jet of the carby. Pull the carby down and blow out all jets with compressed air. regards Phil.

I would try and remove carb and clean it thuroughly. You can soak the parts in solvent or equivelant. The carb would be right after the air filter tube to the intake of engine.

SOURCE: MOUNTFIELD PETROL MOWER WONT RUN

If there is a float bowl on this model, takeoff the center screw and look for a little pilot hole on the side and take a small pin or the like and clean this pilot hole and try again to start. Good Luck Pal.

Champion 35 lawnmower hunts

Clean the air filter (foam type) in warm soap water then apply some oil soaked in, it will smoke afterwards for a short time. Or possible minor adjustment too the mixture screw on the side of the carburetor spring loaded. Allan

My 1994 ultra classic shifts ok but the bike wont go over 35 mph.

Take the air filter off but leave the backing plate on. Start the engine and rev it up a bit while watching the slide inside the carb. It should move up and back down when you rev the engine. Now, don't rev it so high as to blow the engine up just up to about three thousand RPM or so. Don't get your face too close to the carb. If the slide doesn't move up and down, you've probably got a hole in the diaphragm that controls the movement of the slide. That's my best guess since you didn't say it was running badly just wouldn't run over 35 miles per hour.

Good luck

Starting my petrol mower

depending on age of machine set the throttle to maximum revs, and pull the starter cord but newer models have a primer button located on carburettor which is locked just under air filter (black or red colour) push it three times( you should hear it inject fuel) and then pull starter cord, some of these engines have a pre-set throttle ,main concern is that if it has not been used for some time you will need to clean carburettor out, replace diaphragm and remember to use fresh fuel(not older than 90 days) this should cure your problem

Champion Vantage 35 - mower will not keep running

More than likely the jet in the carb is somewhat clogged. Did this just happen after sitting for the winter? If so, start the mower and when it starts to die pump the primer to keep it running. Sometimes it will clean itself in a few minutes. If not, carb cleaner or take the carb bowl off and clean the jet.
Hope this helps
