The Replacement cord is pretty much generic - the middle wire is ground - goes to the green lug - the other two are hot are can go to either the black or red terminals - it does not matter.

Need another cord to put on dryer as my home does not have the large outlet; only a 3 prong outlet. Can this dryer have a new cord put on?

Yes. Putting on a new cord is simple. There is a plate covering the cord that is on there now. Remove the two or three philips screws holding it on. Get a new cord at an appliance store. Use a nut driver to detach the old cord. Hook up the new cord with the colored prongs in the same places as the old. The green will be the one that is missing. Replace the green screw so it is not lost. Be sure to install the cord protector so the sharp edge does not slice through your new cord. Good luck.

I am trying to hook up a 3 prong cord into the dryer but I dont know how you hook up the ground wire.

What voltage does the dryer require? There should be a 'nameplate' somewhere on the machine that has the voltage and Gas requirements. (if it isn't a gas dryer then it'll probably be 240 volt. If it is a gas dryer then a standard 120 volt cord should work). Be sure you are attaching the proper cord... The ground wire should be crimped into a ring terminal connector or a spade terminal connector (can be picked up at any hardware store) and screwed onto any metal surface of the machine(there may be a green screw designated for the ground wire connector)

Wire 3 prong cord

Electric Dryer How To Hook Up Cord pixel_trans.gifFor Three Prong Cords
the Center cord wire goes on the center terminal,
the left on the left ,
and the right on the right.

Note: There should be a ground strap or wire that runs from the center terminal to the dryer case.

For Four Prong Cords
the White cord wire goes in the center,
the Red on the Right,
the Black on the Left.
The green cord wire goes to the case or the external ground screw.

Note: Be sure to disconnect the ground wire or strap that runs from the center terminal to the case. In this Photo (A Whirlpool Dryer) I have ran the wire that runs from the center terminal, the Light Green wire, back to itself rather than cutting it off, just incase I need to put a 3 prong cord back on it some day. The whole purpose of this 3 prong / 4 prong thing is it separates the neutral from the ground. pixel_trans.gif pixel_trans.gif3 Prong Cord Whirlpool Dryer Example terminalblock.jpg 4 Prong Cord Whirlpool Dryer Example 4prongcord_small.jpg

Changing power cord from 4 to 3 prong

Hi,

See this link and read the article carefully - if your dryer already has a 4 wire cord, it should be replaced with same type.

Wiring directions for Kenmore 800 Dryer

Hello mynexthome,
Sounds like you did everything correctly however it is possible the wall receptacle may be miswired. The white wire is the neutral, black and red are the line feeds ( hot ) and green is ground. If you are sure the receptacle is wired correctly and that the power cord is wired as you say it is, then there may be an internal issue with the dryer..or some packing material was not removed and is burning off. ( make sure the drum can spin freely and you aren't smelling a belt burning) The red and black are normally on either side of the neutral but you should match the color code on the terminal block on the dryer. Hope that helps...
Regards,
Rick

Electric cord

What you should get is a new 4 wire cord. It is way less complicated than trying to change out the wall receptacle.
On a 4 wire dryer cord you have White(common) in the middle. Red and Black are hot and go on either side of white. If you really want to make it look good you can put red to red on the terminal and black to black but you don't have to. Some dryers may not have those color hot wires. Green hooks to the chassis with a green screw or any screw connected directly to the frame.
