Vaio VGN-S460 won't boot

I am trying to help my sister-in-law fix her Sony Vaio. She has had it for about 3-4 years I think. When you turn it on, you get the Sony screen but it won't boot and the hard drive keeps making clicking noises. It then goes to the bios which requires a password. She had no restore disk. Apparently the restore stuff is on a partition on the hard drive and she never made a backup disk. She also has no idea what the bios password is. So I'm stuck. I think the hard drive is probably bad. Does anyone know how to get into the bios and/or get the thing to boot from the DVD drive without getting into the BIOS? I was able to disassemble the computer and remove the hard drive but I found out it's an SATA drive and I don't have an adapter so I can't even test it externally.

I'm guessing I'll have to replace the hard drive for sure. What I'm hoping to be able to do is either figure out a way to get into the bios past the password or get the thing to at least boot from the DVD drive. I tried holding F12 and that didn't work. I suspect there's something in the bios that allows you to change the boot device, but since I can't get in...

Well, I changed the hard drive, and now the laptop goes straight to the password rather than clicking for a while, so I suspect the hard drive was part of the problem, but now I still can't do anything because I can't get past the bios password and I can't even get the doggone thing to boot from any other device to try to re-load windows.

Maybe simply buy another SATA HDD to replaced faulty one, which you said it came with "clicking noises".

you also can try hold tee 'C" or "F12" when you power on the laptop to get from DVD booting.

How to Boot Sony Vaio VGN-S460 Laptop without CD/DVD ROM and With bootable USB

If the BIOS does not have the USB as one of the boot options then you cannot boot up with an USB memory stick.
In this case you need to replace the CD/DVD drive with a new one.

Sony vaio vgn s460 - severely virus infected. Wouldnt let any scans be run. Tried a few methods on the internet (bootable rescue, spybot, avg free scan, etc). Windows gets loaded but a downloaded program...

See if you can boot in Safe mode. If yes, then once up in safe mode uninstall all existing anti virus software's that you have installed. Then download Microsoft Security Essentials. But hope you are using a licensed OS. Download, install, update and then restart. Then do a full scan. This should solve your virus issues

Sony vaio fan is making a grinding noise, how can i fix this?

The sony VGN-S460 seems to have an inherent problem with their cpu fans. It is apparent that the fan uses a ball bearing system which over time becomes worn and causes the grinding sound.

The only solution is to replace the entire fan assembly as they are inseparable.

Have vaio VGN-S460, window 7. Can't get internet

Windows 7 is still a beta and Sony probably doesn't make drivers yet for the network adapter on that computer. You might be able to install the windows vista or xp drivers and that may work. You might have to manually install these drivers, however.
