Question about Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 for PC

1 Answer

Word 03 is requesting Prduct Key

I bought a used laptop (no install cds) and Word worked fine for six months when, upon opening Word or a word doc, it is requesting product key. Cancelling out of the dialog box to enter product key results in Word shutting down. The problem actually happened before then stopped as mysteriously as it started, but now its back. Is this a virus? I'm not sure if its related, but I can't seem to download SP3 update either. . . Any help?

Thanks Bluenoser, but all of the other Office programs open and work fine. If it were a trial version of Office, then my other Office programs would request the same product key input, right?

No CD included when I purchased used laptop. .

    You rock!

That's it. I have two Office folders within my MS folder. One is "Office 11" and contains the Word that asks for the product key. Can I simply delete this folder? I don't think I want anything to do with Office 11 anyway and just prefer my Office to work like it always has.

It is likely a trial of Office.

    Not necessarily.

I use to work support for Office setup and outlook.

Do you have an office CD?

  • Gordon Marcott Dec 12, 2008

Look to see if there are two versions of Office or word on the computer. If you find two versions of Office or word and you know the one that is working then remove the other version. It could still be a trial of Office. I worked in Office setup and outlook for 3 years.

Hi,

The Microsoft Office Processional 2010 which came with your laptop was a trail version. It was there for you to use it and check the software and buy it if you like.

The product key at the bottom of the laptop is the key for Microsoft Windows operating system installed in your laptop.

To buy a product key for your office you can visit the following link, MS Office Store.

I just bought this brand spankin' new laptop and it has Vista on it... then the MS Office Home/Student 2007 and that kept asking me for a Prod Key...

The version of Office installed with most laptops is only a trial version. You would need to contact a Microsoft Partner/Reseller (like my company) to purchase a full Office license, or you can purchase directly from Microsoft at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/home-and-student/.
Sadly, the Office installed is a commercial product, and does not come included with your OS license. If you prefer not to pay, you can download OpenOffice for free (it's open source) at OpenOffice.Org. It will handle the default Microsoft file formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt, etc.) and you won't have to pay for it.

If you bought it then the ones that sold you the laptop should have given you a legit key - go back to them and ask for it or your money back.
If you didn't bought it then you have 2 options: either you buy it or you replace it with a Linux OS which is free. Here's one

Please help me with a 25 digit product key. My computer had the trial version when i bought it a few months back and now it is asking for a product key. Help! do i have to buy one

Microsoft will let you download a trail version from their site or as in your case it was installed by the computer manufacture but after 25 uses, you either buy it or it quits. I always recommend the Student version which you can buy from most stores. The store you bought your computer from probably had a discounted version available when you bought the computer.

A better solution is to use a free compatible version from www.OpenOffice.org or use the online free version from M$ at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/web-apps/. You can set the default file types in OpenOffice to the standard Microsoft types, i.e. .doc, .xls, etc

Another alternative is to use Google Documents.

Let me know if this works for you.

Indeed it is a trial version. You must buy the Office key. As you have found out, the WIN7 key is invalid.

Reloaded XP from cds. My Toshiba laptop has a product code/ID but

Are the cds the originals that came with your laptop? If not then that is the problem- you need to use a Toshiba OEM cd for your product key to work with it. If you are using a different brand cd (dell, hp, acer, etc.) then you will need to use their product key.

NTI CD DVD GOLD

The recovery cds will make your laptop as it is when you bought it or how they sold it to you, before using the recovery cds, take a backup of your data files on a external hard disk, pendrive or CD/DVD. then use the recovery cd.

Dont use the recovery cds, unless you dont have another choice.
