Dave. I took the "Lifecam" camera back to best buy and purchased an Logitech QuickCam Communicate MP (S 5500) . I put in the new disc and loaded the software. the camera works fine but when I try to use yahoo messenger it still shows me a window stating "has encountered an error" and shuts yahoo down. That being said, should I still follow your instructions?
Tbrook2,
The following is the link for the latest drivers for the logitech cam
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/435/4224&cl=us,en
Otherwise the directions are the same.
When you click on the above link just select you Operating system and that will take you to the most current drivers for this cam.
then install Yahoo messenger 9 and try you cam again.
If you still have problems let me know.
Thanks
Dave
Tbrook2,
Ok we've eliminated it being a driver issue and yahoo incompatabilty. Now we're into there being settings either in yahoo or a Firewall that are blocking the camera from transmitting on its port. We'll start with Yahoo's settings because in order to offer advice on a firewall I need to know what firewall(s) I'm dealing with.
The following is copied from Yahoo messenges support site:
There are a few reasons you might receive this error message. First, make sure you’re using the "No proxies" connection setting.
To select this setting:
Click Messenger and select Preferences.
Click Connection.
Select the "No proxies" option.
Click OK at the bottom of the window.
Close Yahoo! Messenger completely and start the program again. This should eliminate the error message.
If you’re still unable to connect using the "No proxies" option, you might not have the ability to use the webcam feature.
Your firewall must permit outgoing TCP connections on port 5100. Make the following changes to your firewall:
Protocol: TCP
Server: webcam.yahoo.com
Port: 5100
Most Internet service providers (ISPs) don't have firewalls or proxies, but you should contact your network administrator or ISP for accurate information.
Note: You might be running XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) without your knowledge.
If this does not get your cam up I need to know.
What operating system your running?
What Firewall software your running, name and version # ?
What Router(s) you have between your computer and it's internet connection (Include VOIP "Phone" routers if you have them)
Have a happy Thanksgiving
Thanks
Dave

I uninstalled logitech drivers and yahoo messenger as you suggested and downloaded latest drivers. I downloaded yahoo messenger. I opened yahoo messenger and attempted to acess web cam and once again got the message "Yahoo Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close....." and then shuts down YM.... I sent my 50th error report. If there is some kind of software conflict can you instruct me how to find it? After returning the Lifecam and buying teh Logitech I had hoped the problem was solved.
Thanks for you help. I ended up restoring my system which must have had many corruptions. The camera is working now on yahoo.
