Question about Microwave Ovens

Model 565.8904590 (1991) went dead when starting 2nd round of popcorn

The above counter top model... has worked beautifully until 30 minutes ago.. then "bang" the power to it was lost..... the breaker to it did not trip... it is something inside the unit. Is it worth checking to see what has "burned out", ?? perhaps an inside breaker switched it off... ???

    No smoke or smell of burning..... this is a Kenmore product.. forgot to say that... whole front digital panel is dead... no power anywhere.... Ken

    Hey.. you solved the problem..... the wife had popped about four bags of popcorn and the unit cut out on the start of the first one...... when I took the unit off the shelf.. I noted it was hot......and had to sit it on the counter in the utility room...... I left it there for 30 minutes or so and came back to my computer and noted your last note....... plug it in again..... and I did... and it was working.... explaination... there must be a high temperature cut off within the system.... and once it cooled down everything worked.........     We learned something... when a microwave oven becomes over heated....an internal breaker cuts the power and all panel lighting is lost.... pulling the plug and letting the unit cool.... resets the internal breaker... and plug it in again... and it worked fine...... THANKYOU..

    ok well i'm looking at the sight and there is nothing that can be done to fix it.sorry i wish i could help you more the only thing i can tell you to try is unplug it and try plugging it back in. if it is a 1991 then you got alot of years out of it.when mine did that it was fried

What is the best way to cook popcorn in this oven?
It's best to put the popcorn bag on an upside-down paper plate, and be sure it's off-center, not in the center of the turntable.

Raising the plate and keeping it slightly off center allows more even heating and also protects the glass tray from overheating repeatedly in the center, which can eventually lead to its cracking.

If it still won't cook properly, the magnetron, cooling air flow or power line voltage may be less than it should be.

Popcorn Castastrophy !!!
You would have to remove the top cover and check to see if the main fuse is blown. Usually a 20 amp slo-blow. There are thermal cut out devices, they will reset when the unit cools, so plug it in the next day and see if the clock and power is back up. good luck, Dale

I would suspect the fuse has blown, probably due to either a loose fuse holder or a shorted high voltage capacitor.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout (TCO) / thermal fuse on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

The fuse is usually located behind the grille or on the floor of the oven behind the control panel or between the door switches.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

It will be a ceramic fuse, probably 20 amps. These can be had in most grocery stores, hardware stores, home improvement centers, and big box or department stores.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

If yours is blown, I would buy two or three fuses, just to be safe, because you may find that it blows again right away or shortly after hitting Start.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker (or GFI) when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

The fuse will either be good or bad. If it blows, the unit will be "dead".

Assuming electrical outlet voltage is low, I would suspect that your magnetron is failing.

The magnetron usually has a warranty of 5-9 years.

Will not pop popcorn without burning it
use Orville Rickenbacker ah you know who lol set it for five minutes when you hear it slow take it out works for me no the oven don't need repair popcorn's tough the best way i know to make popcorn is an electric skillet yum yum

Did you unplug it for several minutes and them plug it back in?
