Breville ESP8XL Espresso Machine The steam ring on my machine (which is rubber) broke. Got replacement & installed, but basket that holds coffee does not seat tightly up against the new steam ring when handle is turned to lock position. When brewing, coffee now spews out around side of basket. I have tried tighenting every screw that has anything to do with the fit of the ring & the basket/handle. If I can't fix, is there a repair service that can? Thanks
Re: Can't get tight fit between basket & steam ring
The proper replacement steam ring has an up-side & down side. the brew-head plate must be installed with the grooved side facing up; the steam ring has a groove in one side that fits over the top up the brew-head plate...does this solve the problem? if not, you may have the wrong steam ring/the brewhead plate may be installed incorrectly...oh, nov of 08...i seriously hope you've figured this out already. if not, you don't happen to still have machine in your possession, do you? if so, i'll buy it for $5.

You may have a broken silicone seal, or a cracked filter ring. You can see an example of the small cracks on the ring on a photo at this website: http://www.vancouverwireedm.com/caferomadiyt.htm , just under the screw hole in the top corner.
the machine is building too much steam so the safety is blowing off, there might be a thermostat on the machine that is not telling the elements to turn off at the correct temperature. Use ohms meter to check thermostats.
You really don't need it. You should have a cloth nearby to clean the wand when you're done. So if for some reason you need to move the wand (and with it's meagre rang of mobility I don't know why you would) be sure to grab it with the cloth because it gets really hot. The rubber thing is just there to avoid lawsuits I'm sure. USA USA!
it's quite simple, Quite Simple: manual says packing grounds too tightly/ too fine a grind causes this problem; does your steam wand put out adequate steam? if so, don't pack so tight. of course, the manual is full of lies, so chalk it up to poor workmanship/quality control at factory/bad design/bad business practices a'la lower end breville machine. take yer pick.
get a used starbucks barista by saeco for a couple hundred...you'll be pleased. (know i am-and i only paid $25 for my year old breville esp8xl POS). verify it works-it will probably last longer & perform better. if inclined/capable, maybe you can replace the pump yourself (a new one's prob in $35-$40 range; if more, scrap the machine or sell it "as is" for parts & put the money toward a better machine. good luck!
We had that happen and it was a crack in the black ring that holds the filter. Breville could not supply us with one but we found an OEM part in aluminum from http://www.vancouverwireedm.com/caferomadiyt.htm. We received it 1 week after ordering. It was pretty easy to replace. Our machine works fine now.
