Question about Canon imagePROGRAF W8400 InkJet Printer

Grayscale, black only printing

We have a Canon 8400 and are trying to print a grayscale, black only image. We have a grayscale photo and we also have a full-color poster with some black only/grayscale text. We cannot get the grayscale to print without color in it. It keeps printing with a lot of magenta. We have tried many different color settings and paper profiles. The full-color poster needs to be printed on matte paper. How can we get a grayscale/black ink only image to print with black ink only?!

FYI... If this Canon device is being driven by a
regular print driver and not a true postscript rip, the device will be
    hard to control.

My first suggestion is this... Open the grayscale image in Photoshop
and convert it to your working RGB color space. Next, make sure to save
the file as an RGB image with the color profile embedded. Update the
image in the layout and create a new PDF. When making the PDF use the
    Full Gamut job.options

    http://alphalink.alphagraphics.com/opera...

The PDF you end up with will be in an RGB format. It is best to print
using RGB content to an RGB print driver. If you have mixed content in
the layout document,i.e. RGB and CMYK and Spot, just change the option
on the "output" setting when making the PDF to "Convert to Destination"
and use the sRGB profile as the destination space.

Now, print the new RGB PDF through the print driver with ICC matching
enabled and sRGB as the preferred color space. You can also control the
color further in the printer driver as well... there are RGB sliders
that you can use to adjust the color.

SOURCE: Canon MP830 - extreme ink useage

According to a service manual for a similar Canon printer, the grayscale printing should only use the Pigment Black ink PGI-5BK.

On fast it is 300x300dpi with 1 pass, standard is 600x600dpi with 1 pass and high is 600x600 with 4 passes.

On plain paper in colour it is meant to still only use the C/M/Y and again the big pigment black ink PGI-5BK, it only uses the smaller black ink once you set it to use a photo type paper in the printing settings.

Selecting grayscale only will also make use of your color. when u select grayscale, look under the print options and select black cartridge only and for more economic printing, use fast draft or draft printing.

Select true black and white. Any other setting uses the colour cartridge to sharpen the printing.

SOURCE: My printer is out of grayscale ink. It will not

bukes1 is actually right. I have the same printer and I'm having the same problem. The MP980 has a black, pixel black, cyan, magenta, yellow, and a grey cartridge, so 6 all together. The grey replacement cartridge is not readily available at a store. You have to purchase it online. I don't understand why Canon does not include it in the color multi-pack. It's quite a nuisance, because when the cartridge runs out you can't print at all.

Canon Printer MP250 doesn't want to keep the grayscale ONLY setting.many attempts to use only black ink but it keeps on setting color ink by default. SB001

If you are changing to greyscale before you print, it will only stay there for that print job. You need to go to the printer through the control panel - devices - printer and change it to greyscale. It should stay that way then.

I have used last 4 year canon 2900B printer. How to set 300 dpi printing resoluation

Canon PIXMA Manuals MG2900 series Resolution
Resolution The data in the image you have scanned is a collection of dots carrying information about brightness and color. The density of these dots is called "resolution", and resolution will determine the amount of detail your image contains. The unit of resolution is dots per inch (dpi). Dpi is the number of dots per inch (2.5 cm). The higher the resolution (value), the more detail in your image; the lower the resolution (value), the less detail.

How to Set the Resolution You can set the resolution in Resolution on the (Scanning from a Computer) tab of the Settings dialog.
Appropriate Resolution Settings Set the resolution according to the use of the scanned image.
Item Type Use Color Mode Appropriate Resolution Color photo Copying
(Printing) Color 300 dpi Creating a postcard Color 300 dpi Saving to a computer Color 300 dpi Using on a website or attaching to e-mail Color 150 dpi Black and white photo Saving to a computer Grayscale 300 dpi Using on a website or attaching to e-mail Grayscale 150 dpi Text document (document or magazine) Copying Color, Grayscale, or Black and White 300 dpi Attaching to e-mail Color, Grayscale, or Black and White 150 dpi Scanning text using OCR Color or Grayscale 300 dpi Important
  • If you double the resolution, the data size of the scanned image quadruples. If the file is too large, the processing speed will slow down significantly, and you will experience inconvenience such as lack of memory. Set the minimum required resolution according to the use of the image.
Note
  • When you will be printing the scanned image by enlarging it, scan by setting a higher resolution than the recommended one above.

Canon Pixma 3600 I want black & white printing only for documents Question: How do i turn off the colour cartridges for black & white printing only?

The Grayscale print option optimizes the look of color slides for printing on a black and white printer by adding shading. The Pure Black and White option prints your slides in monochrome.

  1. Open the presentation you want to print.
  2. Click on the word File in the Menu Bar.
  3. Select the option Print.
  4. The Print dialog will appear.
example:
sayurisan20_3.jpg 5.In the Color/Grayscale section, choose the Grayscale option to print in black, white, and shades of gray. 6.Choose the Pure Black and White option to print in black and white only. 7.Click on the OK button.

Black and white prints are not black

Sorry, steve, that you are experiencing this problem.

According to canon.com's website regarding the i9900 InkJet Photo Printer:

Why color ink may be used when printing in black and white Even when printing in black and white, color ink is used for the following reasons:
  1. Automatic cleaning of the print head.

To prevent the print head nozzles from clogging, the print head is automatically cleaned periodically. At that time, a small amount of each color ink is consumed.

Therefore, although printing in black and white is performed, color ink is also consumed.

  2. Color inks may be used to create black.

When printing in grayscale or on photo paper or when duplex printing, although printing appears in black and white, the color black may be created using the three (cyan, magenta, and yellow) color inks. Printers without a pigment black tank / cartridge will print black / grayscale will create a composite black using color ink even on plain paper.

Therefore, although printing in black and white is performed, color ink may be consumed.
  3. In order to keep the heavy black ink from smearing on the page or in the printer, color ink is used when duplex printing to help create black text.

    ---
I might suggest taking out the color ink cartridges leaving only black there, but some printers don't take kindly to this. So, you may have to further experiment with magenta, cyan, and yellow to make it at least seem b&w to your best eye's judgment.

Good luck on this.

PRINTS PROBLEM

More than likely what you want is a gray scale image and not a true Black and White image. If you tell the printer to print Black and White for a photo, you will lose all the gray shades available between the black and white bookends.

Normally, you can set the printer to print grayscale only from the driver properties page.
