Plug a regular phone into the wall jack and listen for a dial tone.

Make sure the phone cord is plugged into the LINE port of the fax machine.

Just got this and trying to set up...I can send faxes, but can't receive them..I am sure I am doing something wrong. Any suggestions..thanks

Make sure you are using the genuine brother line lead and not an old one from your previous machine. Look at the lcd and it should show date and time and fax at the end. If it does not say Fax then you have not set the auto receive to fax only.

Sends faxes fine, but will not receive. Message "FAD" on screen

Could the message be reading "TAD"? If you have an answering machine hooked up anywhere on the same line as the fax, you need to refer to page 16 of your manual. Set your answering machine to 2 rings and de-activate the toll saver mode. If you have a dedicated fax line without the TAD, set your fax recieving mode to fax only by pressing the MODE button under the LCD display untill fax only isindicated

We can send faxes, but have not been able to receive any faxes. This happened after we disconnected the fax because the memory was full.

try unplugging and hold down your "stop/exit" key while plugging back in. continue holding button for 5 seconds. once you see the time/date screen, have someone try to fax you and see if that takes care of it. of course, make sure the receive mode is set to "fax only" if you have a dedicated line. if that doesn't do it, write back.

good luck,
razors

BROTHER FAX MACHINE 2800

Your Brother machine#s Sleep Mode function reduces power consumption while the machine is idle. You can adjust how long your Brother machine is idle (between 00 and 99 minutes) before Sleep Mode is initiated. Please note that the default setting is 00 minutes, and the timer automatically resets itself after the Brother machine receives a fax, receives data from your PC, or makes a copy. To adjust your Brother machine#s Sleep Mode setting, please follow these steps:

1. Press MENU/SET, 1 (General Setup), 7 (Sleep Mode).

2. Use the dial pad to enter the amount of time the fax machine is idle before Sleep Mode is initiated (00 to 99 minutes).

3. Press the MENU/SET key to confirm your choice.

4. Press the STOP/EXIT key to exit the menu.

NOTE: If you frequently print, copy, or fax, set the idle time long
enough to insure that you will not always have to wait for the Brother machine to warm up.

There is a big trouble

all faxes use automatic fallback sytem for dropping the speed as well as the machines communicate on the highest common speed therefor you don't need to set the speed. Apart from the situation if your phone line is disturbed and not receiving faxes and giving communication errors.... happy faxing omnipresent
