Question about E-Machines etower 500is PC Desktop

1 Answer

I have an eTower 500is and I want to add a second HD or completely just replace the old one. I have the reboot disk from emachines to restore the system, does this restore my Windows 98 as well or is there a separate disk to restore the OS. I still have the product key for the OS and the book, but I do not recall the system coming with a windows 98 disk, just the restore disk. If I can reboot the whole system with OS using the emachines restore disk, how would I go about installing the new HD? If I installed it as a second HD, how do I get the two to function as one (mirror each other or whatever)? I am not used to upgrading old systems, but I'd rather pick up an HD for $20 than a new refurb system for $150 just for my fiance to surf the internet and run a few programs! Thanks! Julie

Does that mean that the restore disk that came with the system will restore windows 98 as well?

how do I use the raid facility in the bios, is there a link that you can give me that gives a step by step for that?

There are no restore disks for win98.
if you want to "mirror" two hard drives you have to use the "raid" facility in the bios

you should restart and press F2 (on most pcs) to opent Setup. from there find the name and version of your bios. then go to your current bios providers website and download the flash update. it should be listed under the support tab. you may have to search. hope this helps. please rate me and thanks for choosing enterprise computing solutions.

I forgot my login info

You will need to restart your computer in safe mode (when you restart your computer, you will have push something like "F10" or "F2" to get to boot options to choose safe mode), go to "user accounts" in your control panels and simply make yourself a new account!

Computer won't reboot

Check your BIOS settings, specifically the diskette drive setting. Next, check the cabling to the drive itself. Your problem may have nothing to do with the diskette drive, but check it out. Next, have someone download hard drive diagnostics for the brand of drive in the machine. You could have errors on the drive, and a diagnostic program may locate, repair them. The startup disks, these do a full system restore, reinstall of the operating system? The machine will boot from the first startup disk and begin the reload process?
