Re: Janome RX18S will only run in reverse
Unplug, remove the base and locate the collar on the lower shaft that is attaced to the metal rod and reverse button.
It should move freely but is probably jammed with dust and old oil.
A spray lubricant may work best, jiggle the collar by hand to try and free it,......you may need several applications and some patience, I have had them on the bench for several days in rare cases, some, very few, do not come good.
Have an old rag or tissues surrounding the shaft to catch overspray, and work in a well ventilated area.

Normally this manual will cost you $20.00 on the net...but I found it for FREE
Go to the following website and download it FREE.
Give it time to download, it takes a little while
Please take time to rate me 4 thumbs ups
I would really suggest that you start with this website www.sewing.about.com, there is so much really good general information on sewing, sewing machines, threading up, trouble shooting, using the right sized needle and quality thread and it is all free.
I have found a pdf file of the manual on line ftp://ftp.drivehq.com/ click on the link saying "RX18S instructions", it will take a while to load as its 17MB.
1/28/13 - I have Janome Harmony 2049 that was initially sewing forward with no reverse and then after about 12 inches of sewing would ONLY sew in reverse. After spending an hour getting the plastic housing off...I was able to locate the shaft that made the reverse. It needed lubrication and after working it in and unjamming the part from the down position, the forward and reverse now work! Huh, right? Hope it continues to work well. It is a smooth running machine, otherwise. Good luck!
Try changing the needle sometimes over use causes burrs on the end of a needle and always remember to use proper needles to appropriate fabrics. Change needles frequently to avoid unnecessary wear on the feed dog teeth
Have a sewing machine needle handy and turn the machine off.
With your left hand, press and hold /StartStop, Up/Down and reverse while switching on the machine. The screen should display little cross hairs. Using the BLUNT end of the needle NOT THE TIP, press the exact center of the cross hairs. Continue a the cross hairs will change positions on the screen. When finished, switch machine off, wait five seconds and switch back on.
