I think it is a parental lock feature that should be in the menu system to turn off.

In any CD player/changer, this issue is often the result of either the CD itself or the laser optic being in need of cleaning. You can actually clean the CD by using your hands or a soft lint-free cloth and wash in dish soap and slightly warm water, then rinse. If the optic itself needs the cleaning, you can buy a kit at any stereo shop or Radio Shack. I would start with the CD and then clean the optic if necessary.

CDs go in the Upside Down position. Your PD M501 will accept PRW 1139, PRW 1141 and 163.

The standard cartridge for the Pioneer PD-M501 is the Pioneer JD-M300 6-disc magazine, and you can find them at Amazon.com for $25 new. The JD-M300 fits a lot of different brands of CD players, not just this particular brand and model. With the top off the unit, you can turn the tray gears manually for slow eject function. Unplug unit before touching anything inside, check internal fuses.
Sometimes the little ball bearings that keep the cart trays separated come out causing tray jams and shorts.
Make sure your tray retracts all the way into the player flush with the face plate when loading, gently push it in while retracting for those occasional no-read situations. (Also for Denon that takes these same carts). Also note that the CDs go in the Upside Down position.

This unit, if it has been moved recently, could have had the laser lens fall out. If thats not the case, open the unit and clean the lens, and while it is open insert a disc and see if the disc spins up to full speed, as the spindle motor is very popular to go bad in these units. Good Luck
