What is the flame sensor

The flame sensor is attached to the pilot light. It's down on the right side of the burner tray and usually has an orange wire attached.
The flame sensor lets the heater know that the pilot light has been lit and it's okay to open the main valve.

I can smell gas but heater will not ignite. Display shows that the heat is on. Thanks!

First of all, be careful while looking into the system when the gas comes on because it could unexpectedly ignite and burn you.

You listed this question in the Jandy Lite 2 Natural Gas Pilot Light Heater. If your heater is a pilot light heater then the pilot light needs to be lit so when the gas comes on it will ignite.

If your unit contains a thermal ignitor it should glow brightly when the gas starts. If it is glowing then it is probably not glowing brightly enough or not in the right place and therefore needs to be either replaced or repositioned. If it is not glowing then you should measure the voltage using a volt/ohm meter going to the ignitor. If it reads about 115 VAC then the ignitor is broken and needs to be replaced. If it reads much lower voltage then the board that supplies power to it probably has a problem on it. It may be a defective relay, bad solder joint or some other problem. I would first re-solder the relay connections to the board and see if that fixes it. Otherwise the board will need to be replaced.

If the unit has a spark ignitor and you hear a spark sound it may be too low power or the spark probe might be in the wrong place and therefore not delivering the spark to the fuel air mixture. If you don't hear the spark then you may have a bad relay or bad solder joint to it.

Please let me know how this works out. Thank you.

No flame

Several steps here to check...
turn power off unit and back on
set thermostat to heat
watch for pilot to ignite..igniter should glow orange or cherry red or spark if its a spark type ignitor
Did you see a pilot light ignite?

If not you probably have a bad igniter.

If pilot lit....in a little bit you hear a click of the gas valve opening..then the main burners will ignite

If you see the pilot and the main burner lights but goes out in a few minutes or immediately you may have an issue of the "high limit" switch tripping.

Is the blower fan turning that blows air out of your vents?
are all your vents open in your house? too many times i see homes with almost all vents shut.

Pilot lite won't light

I believe your heater uses a" Glow plug" style igniter not a traditional pilot. This type takes a few minutes to lite. Be sure the correct pump is running, the gas valve is turned on, and the Bypass valve is at least 1/2 way closed. Also make sure you have at least 10 psi on the filter gauge.

Charm glow gas heater won't stay lit changed thermocouple and it worked for 2 days

Dust build up inside the pilot light burner assembly. A clean pilot makes noise and has a blue flame when it is burning. A dirty pilot has a quiet and smaller flame with an orange tip.

I have a Comfort Glow propane heater connected a 20lb tank. The pilot has a hard time staying lite but when I do get it lite ang turn the hearter on low it will shut off in a minute or in some cases 20...

If you have a pilot, you have a thermocouple. I would start with the thermocouple. The thermocouple is supposed to be heated by the piolet and to keep the pilot gas on. If it is faulty, the pilot will quit and the heater will not reignite until you light it again. Good luck...Lee

Pilot light stays on but burner doesnt ignite

usually the small opening on the burner that 'points' to the pilot light will get clogged with cleaning soap or spills. Look carefully (the burner may be very easy to remove for inspection. There should be a small hole on the side pointing toward the location of the pilot light. It will be lower down than the main burner openings. Clean it out with a wooden toothpick.

LOL.... your fuel is not boiling.... the closer propane gets to its vaporization point (-44%F) the less vapor it produces. clean the snow off of the 100# or lay it on its side to give it more surface area for vaporization.
