I had this problem with my Dell 2005FPW as well, it was the inverter, i ordered the part for around $60 after S&H and installed it at home.

I would suggest trying another monitor to rule out your PC or monitor card. I would also check the video settings on the PC. Then assuming your cable/connector and video card are okay, it sounds like a lamp or lamp driver (a.k.a. ballast or inverter) issue. In other words, an internal issue that probably needs component-level troubleshooting.

if the screen is flickering it could be a bad monitor. Try hooking up another known good working one if you can. If the known good working monitor works then you know the dell monitor you were given is bad. If you get the same flickering result then make sure you wait until your laptop boots up into windows then try to change the output to the monitor. If you can get a picture then try the other monitor to see if you can get a picture as well.

If you can get pictures with both monitors then you know it was a matter of changing the output on the laptop if you get a picture on one but not the other then you know one of the monitors is bad. Depending on the laptop you have will depend on what key combination is used to change the video output to the monitor.

It’s very likely your monitor has failed. Most Dell monitors have a 3 year warranty, so if you got it before three years, you could get it replaced by calling Dell. If you got the monitor with the computer, you can check your warranty online from with your computer Service Tag from . If you bought the monitor separately, you would need an Order Number or Customer Number for the purchase, or you could call Dell support and they could pull it out with your registered phone number. Dell would also need the serial number (starting with CN XXX..) from the back of the monitor.

Hi, My name is Todd and I'm a customer advocate at Dell's corporate headquarters. My team helps customers via blogs, forums, and other tech sites online. You said the monitor is 2 years old. Do you have the original order number still? Depending on how you purchased the monitor it may have up to a 3 year manufacturer warranty and I may be able to replace it if it is within that warranty period. Please email me at if you can locate the order number and I'll be glad to see if its still under the manufacturer warranty. Include my first name (Todd) in the subject line of the email so it can quickly be routed through to me, and include the order or customer number if you have it.
