Surging problem on 10 HP Briggs & Stratton rear mounted engine on @86 Snapper mower

The motor starts and runs for a while then when warmed up it begins surging with load or not and then eventually shuts down apparently from lack of fuel. Usually it restarts.

Have you checked the choke that it is off after you get the engine started, the black smoke is definitely from the choke, if you take the carb off and check that the needle closes when it should,as one can easily do an adjustment by bending the float/tab,rgds

SOURCE: I have a Quantum XTE 60 Briggs & Stratton on

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
There are 7 different versions of this engine. I need to know which one you have by model number. Model number examples are listed below:

12V802-1776-B1

12V802-1733-A1

12V802-0109-01

Without that information it is difficult to help you. What I will say is usually a dirty air cleaner makes an engine runs rich. (Too much gas)

However.. speaking in generic terms on must Briggs and Stratton engines there is a single fuel air mixture jet screw on the side of the carburetor body. To reduce the amount of fuel being used you turn the screw clockwise. (screw in) You should not have to turn the screw more than 1/8 turn to get the correct fuel mixture. If you have to turn it more than 1/8 turn first suspect the air filter and last would be a problem with the float level or float needle. I can provide manuals for float needle and float level repairs if you respond with an engine model number.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

SOURCE: briggs & stratton with idle problem

This is not unusual at idle; there is a governor to limit maximum RPMs and this device isn't worth beans at an idle.
You may be able to carefully adjust the idle adjustment (see your manual or B&S website) to achieve a somewhat more even idle speed.

There should be a drain plug on the underside of the mower deck. Raise that side of deck, remove the plug and drain the oil. Replace the plug and add new oil. Hope this helped.

SOURCE: briggs & stratton 550 / surges, gas hog

check your air filter. If it's clogged, the engine will spool up to keep from dying, run for about 15 seconds, then it will happen again. If that's it, just clean the air filter. Solved my problem

Why engine rpm surges

Dirty air inlet in carb. Remove carb and clean. Also run a fuel clean like sea foam in gas tank to help with any water or bad fuel that might be in the tank.

How do I determine the resale value of a Snapper Mower?

I would search craigslist in 'farm & garden'. Enter "rider'riding mower'tractor snapper" without the quote marks, and check the 'title' check box and click 'search'.
Compare the results for similar size and hp, check the visual condition, and vintage. Also note how long the post has been on the list, as the longer the time since posting, the more likely it is priced a bit too high. You should be able to get a pretty good ballpark value by watching for a little while or even on your first search.

I need to find free diagram for linkage hookup on a 10 HP Briggs & Stratton Snapper riding lawnmower

I would go to mytractorforum.com, click on the word 'forum' just to the right of the tractor wheel, and scroll down to the small engines and repair section. Inside 'stickies' is a directory of B&S service manuals.

Engine wont fire....

There should be 1 black wire that grounds the coil(s) for kill. Be sure this black wire is not grounded when switch is in on or start position. It will be connected to the coil(s) at the flywheel.

I have a Snapper Briggs & Stratton lawn mower Model Series 126T00 and for some reason it will not start.I drained the gas tank ,put fresh gas in it. I did a caburetor kit and it still will not start....

How about the key way? Its the timing of the motor. Its under the pull rope and the wheel under the pull rope. Might be cut or broke in half.
