Tumble dryer when switched on cuts power to all sockets in house

I've just replaced the belt and bearing on my Hotpoint VTD00 tumble dryer. Now, when, I switch the machine on, my RCD switch kicks in, and all appliances on the same ring main lose power. The only way I can restore power to the circuit is to disconnect the tumble dryer plug from the socket and continue using the other appliances.

Its just cost me £30 in spares (belt and bearing) to fix those issues. I now find the tumble dryer still won't work.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this problem? Is there a solution?

Many thanks,

    Thanks very much!

Any chance of a picture, so I know what I'm supposed to disconnect / remove.

Have tried the dryer with the heater element removed, (completely). As you said, it works (doesn't trip the RCD).

Have purchased a new dryer as an urgency. Will buy a replacement heater as a back up dryer, when I have some spare cash, so at least I'll have a back-up.

    Thanks for your assistance.

Word of cauction. Apparently, there are two types of heater element (£40.00 for a replacement heater element).

    Regards

Hi.
Try it with the heater disconnected, you will find it at the rear of the m/c at the bottom left behind a removable panel.
You may have to remove the top cover and the right hand side panel looking at the m/c from the front. Try it again.
I fit does not trip. then your heater is faulty.
If it still trips then you are probably going to have to call en engineer

I had the same problem after it tripped the fuse i looked in the dryer where the cloths were and saw that there was a buildup of steam in the drum. i then realised that because i was using the dryer in a very cold outhouse in the winter the water in the cloths was condensing too fast for the machine to process, this in turn caused a a backup of steam in the drum which backed up so much that the heating elements shorted out and caused the fuse to trip out. i hope this helps. after moving the dryer to a warmer part of the house i have had no problems.

I have a hotpoint VTD00 tumble dryer and it is heating up but the drum isn't spinning and smells of burning. Thanks, Annmarie

The belt is probably worn out and is slipping, the smell is from the belt slipping on the drum.
