Question about Western Digital My Book Pro Edition II WDG2TP10000 1 TB FireWire 400 (1394a) Hard Drive

Mount with Firewire 400 fails: WD MyBook Pro EII WDG2TP10000 1TB

After changing one defective drive (Drive B.), and reformatting under Raid 1. (mirror) everything works with a USB 2 connection, but I would like to connect the MyBook unit to my Firewire hub.
Now I cannot even get the unit to mount when directly Firewire-liked to my PC.
The drivers are supposed to be installed as soon as I insert the WD Software CD-Rom, but it seems that the Firewire link is not recognised.

Strange that the USB-link works.
Would be very pleased if you can suggest a solution.

Many thanks = John

Hello. You may have erased some firmware drivers, or even have a bad connection on the unit. The easiest solution (if still under warranty) is to get the unit replaced. if not then you may have to make a visual inspection of the PCB at the iee1394 port (firewire/i-link) connection and make sure nothing is loose. if that fails, you may have to look up the particular company and request the firmware.

My Mac no longer recognizes the drives

Raid 1 mirrors the disks, but they are still in an array. You need to identify which disk of the two failed. Replace the bad one and let the unit rebuild the raid if it can. This could take hours. Independently, I have not found them to work alone. They need the built raid array. I lost a ton of pictures on a 4 drive raided array that lost one drive, even though they were raided mirror.
Best bet is to see if your manufacturer will guide you through the diagnostics and procedures to restore the array for that unit.

Write delay message could not save all data for file F:\$FMft when doing back up using WD my book premium II 2tb raid split

I presume that Windows assigned 'F:' to your WD MyBook.

Windows was trying to write the 'MFT' ("Master File Table") file, to the 'F:' drive, but it failed to complete.

Is the drive "full" ? Can you delete some files, and try again to doing your "backup"?

You may be able to remove the hard drive manually and try another USB adapter to access it on your computer.

Might be pootched though.

Rule of thumb is to never save your files to only 1 source. Its not a question of if a hard drive is going to fail but WHEN.

Installing Firewire 400 on a Western Digital 500gb external My Book Pro

Don't connect the USB and firewire at the same time, use one or the other. In general for USB, for the very first connection, it is better to have the computer fully booted, and the MyBook spun up, before connecting the USB cable. After that, you can boot the computer with or without the MyBook connected or turned on. For the firewire connection, check your manual for the correct order of connection and power on.

USB and firewire 400 are roughly comparable. USB is theoretically a little faster, but you will see little difference. There are other factors that can affect your actual performance, so your best answer is to try a test yourself. Time a copy of a very large file, and a copy of a folder with a very large number of files.
