I suppose that nothing is muted in windows xp anywhere ? all sliders in the volume control is set to max ? check what sliders are displayed in the volume control, referring specifically to "wave" as most sound is sent through there..

then also remember you have hardware volume control on the laptop ( either a manual volume control dail or buttons or by pressing the "fn" key and the V+ V- keys... they are marked blue on some of the keys

When I power on I get a er17 then it shuts off.

This error usually means a serious configuration issue with the installed operating system. If you have files currently on the hard drive (pictures, documents, etc.) that you must have, and you don't have a backup of these files separate from the hard drive on the laptop, you may need to have someone with PC knowledge remove the hard drive from the laptop and recover the files manually for you. Otherwise the usual advice is to 'restore' your original state to the laptop, which generally erases all files on the current hard drive and restores the laptop to the way it left the factory. See Laptops and netbooks Flex Series Flex 10 Notebook Lenovo Lenovo Support US or Laptops and netbooks Flex Series Flex 10 Notebook Lenovo Lenovo Support US for examples of how to restore your laptop. Consult the owners manual for which process is best for your machine.

I suppose your laptop must still be under warranty, so you could easily get a replacement for the faulty hard drive.
If it is out of warranty, then depending on various factors (budget, warranty) you would have choices. Seagate is a well known brand for hard drives. You may want to check the availability with the Lenovo service center guys too.

Black blank screen Lenovo 3000 N100

You say the laptop all of a sudden flashed off.

How old is the laptop? You may have suffered one of two things? First of all, if the hard drive will not boot back up, even after using the recovery discs, then that would explain it powering off. I have seen this happen on old desktop hard drives.

Next, try to get the transformer or adapter tested. It may not be putting out enough amperage to run the laptop.

Lenovo 3000n100 goes to rescue and recovery 4 on start up

If the drive was bad, it SHOULD give an error message to that fact. You have 2 doing the same thing. I do NOT believe in coincidence. I would first try a new hard drive. If that works, you have to determine the value of the data on the old drive(s). A data recovery service may be your only refuge, albeit, expensive.
If a new drive does not work, I would contact Lenovo. If you have 2 out of 2 bad, unless you use your laptop as a car jack to change tires, they must have seen this problem before. They may even offer to repair at no charge even though the systems are out of warranty.
I hope that helps.

What about removing the hard drive from the laptop and put it into sata box, to be USB external drive.
And then get out your important data, and format the hard disk.

and try again to boot???

If it doesn't work , try to replace the memory it might be the problem with the memory.

Brand new hard drive >>>>> problem ? yeah ........my bad .

Vincent:

It sounds like you corrupted your install of WinXP...it happens.

What you need to do now is (first take a deep breath)...OK, that's better.

When you boot your PC, make sure your WinXP CD is in the CDROM drive. You'll only get a 3-5 second window to catch the "Press any key to boot from CD" message as it pops across the screen...you have to be sitting there, in front of the monitor waiting for it to display (or you can just start pressing the space bar or any other key every second or so as the system boots).

Don't just hold the key down because you'll get a "Keyboard Error" if you do that.

Just wait until you see the boot from CD prompt and hit a key - this will get you back into the WinXP CD's setup menu.

Follow the instructions that I posted before for formatting the drive using the recovery console (Found Here).
