Mine is the same model and it was giving me this same message when I tried to start it up. "LENS ERROR, RESTART CAMERA". It's probably a result of you dropping it. I research it and could'nt find the answer anywhere. I got mad and upset because I use my camera so much and it was not working for the holidays so I hit the lens of the camera on a desk, amazingly I turned it on after I hit t and it started working. I know it sounds a little crazy but give it a try! GOOD LUCK!

Not a good sign my friend -- if the lens is stuck out then it's a shop-fix . Are you still in warrantee ?
The lens has a small motor on the PCB that pushes/pulls the lens into it's position. If this motor has broken then - sorry -- but it's very rare problem. Ray

Canon powershot A590 displayes lens error, restart camera.

I had this problem. Nothing was lodged between the body and lens, restarting multiple times did nothing, cleaning, torquing, twisting over several days - nothing.

So, figuring "what could it hurt?" I just smacked it on the heel of my hand a couple times. Now it works.

firm percussive maintenance saves the day once again.
