Re: Can't get power

Hi Doc, How have you determined that the A/C adaptor is working correctly? When you plug the adaptor into the laptop do any of the LEDs do anything? What about the battery, can you run off it?

When you plug the power cord in the lap top does not even power up there is nothing

Your power supply is either faulty or your computers power supply area is faulty, if you have a light on the power supply usually green, you can tell that way if your power supply is working, the other way to tell would be a multi meter checking dc voltage from the power supply's end, if you get around 13-14.5 volts somewhere in that area, then it is supplying voltage and is okay, which would mean it would be your power supply in the computer on the motherboard is faulty, which needs serviced by the company if under warranty or computer tech, if your power supply is all the way in and plugged in the laptop, it's usually one of those two issues, it can still work on battery and sometimes it wont if it is the computer, i would first suspect the power supply itself first, and check it while plugged in , even plug it into another outlet just to rule that out. if the power supply is bad and you replace it, the computer should work fine, unless there is internal damage in the computer. Hope this helps.

My laptop acer extensa 4420 5239 will not power on.The battery light goes green if i charged it fine. It seems that the switch is having a problem or might be the power supply. how would i know?. please...

Probably there is a problem with your battery charger or power supply. It might not charging your battery. The only reason why the laptop would not power on if there is no power supply coming in, either from a battery or a direct connection from the power supply. You can check your battery charger or power supply using a multimeter. Check if there is a voltage reading coming from your charger.

Charger was plugged in and working fine, went into

OK unplug power supply from back of laptop, remove battery, insert power supply, if NO light, on laptop, power supply is broken..Replace. IF it is OK, hold power button ON for a while, or until, the PC starts, if/when it starts, shutdown, with power ON key, and then take out power supply, replace battery, replace power supply, turn laptop on, now should be OK.

Dell Inspiron 1721 - screen goes black

check the light on the power supply that you are hooked up to. before you plug it into the laptop see if there is a green light when the plug has power from the wall. if you see a green light on...good. it means the power supply is responding correctly so far. if you get no green light, then your transformer is out in the psu. if you get a green light and plug in to the laptop and the light goes out, one of two things could be going on. first there could be a short in the psu like the previous tech said, the second more serious issue could be the power controller on the motherboard. they've been known to go out. like the tech before said. try another power supply if you can. but if you are getting a green light on the power supply before you plug it in...there may be another problem with it.

good luck!

HP dv9000 display works fine on battery but not AC

It's either the motherboard or the power supply.

I'd start with testing the power supply. If you've got a multi-meter great. Just measure the voltage and see if it fluctuates.

If not, check with a local repair shop to see if they have a power adapter they could use to test with.

The battery does not charge anymore ,the bios setting says idle

remove battery and reseat.
Use VOM (Volt-Ohm Meter) and phsically check to make sure the power supply is putting out advertised voltage (typically 19-20 VDC)
Make sure power supply recepticle (the female part on the laptop itself) has not been broken or reamed out such that contact is not being made.

When you plug power supply in, does the charging light on the laptop come on?

Power issues on HP DV1000

It is possible you have two dud batteries. Recharageable batteries have a limited life, they have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles.
With the battery removed and only the power supply connected and the laptop powered up, when you touch the connector on the laptop and the laptop does not shut down then the laptop connector is OK.

If you can verify your new battery is OK the the fault could be the power supply adapter, if may not produce enought current to run and charge the battery. Try charging the battery overnight by turning off the laptop and leaving on the mains t charge. Borrow a mains adapter and test it on your computer.

You can also check the BIOS setting for power management, ie. hibernate, low power shut down etc.

Dead Sony Laptop

If power supply is supplying correct voltage, then you do not need power supply PCB.

Try starting the laptop with AC adapter and no battery, if battery is shorting out you may get same problem.

Test the soldering joint on the AC socket and laptop motherboard, if there is a bad soldering on laprop ac adapter socket, you get same symptoms.

If it is none of the above, and the adapter is fine, then it is usually a faulty motherboard.

Laptop will not power on at all.

Don't know what you have for a laptop, so will have to give you a generic process, here. Power down. Remove hard drive, remove cd reader and/or floppy drive. Remove memory cards. Replace only 1 memory card in the main slot (probably marked as slot 1). Try to power it back up and let us know what happens.
