It is really damaged, and will definitely fail very soon,
If there is "inestimable" data on it, you should download hiren boot cd and burn it on a disk with witch you will succeed to boot, access the hard drive utilities, and use disk doctor utility, (but it shouldn't perhaps not work) cos of the imminent failure of disk

Hey, the things you have mentioned tell me of a failure, and the best resolution might be to get in touch with maxtor or your dealer for warranty repairs..
Warranty checker available on this page http://www.maxtor.com/en/main/support.html

There are a few things we can check open the computer management by right clicking on my computer, select manage, on the left side of the management window click on disk management now on right side look and see if you can find your external hdd..

I need the software to get into my Maxtor one touch 4 plus

Hello,

all of the documentation and downloads for this product are now available via Seagate, as Maxtor was acquired. They are still supporting all the drives Maxtor produced for the normal periods of time.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Maxtor manager software shows no drives

Hi,

First and foremost if you're getting power but not seeing the drive you likely have either a drive or enclosure circuitry failure.

If you have no power lights try a new power adapter.

If the drive has failed and you want the data back you will need a Data Recovery Pro to asist you, if the enclosure has failed it will be much simpler.

Step one take the drive enclosure to a PC shop(no offence to Mac techs but they stink at salvage efforts, must be too many years of promising nothing ever fails ;)). When you get there ask them to remove the hard drive from your Maxtor enclosure and pop it into a generic enclosure(looks cheap but the internals are identical in most cases). Then ask them to test the drive to see if it shows up, depending on how you formatted it they may need MacDisk to make it visable.

If it works, buy the enclosure and head home, you're done. Plug it into your Mac and go on with your day, no harm no foul.

If this fails to see the drive, then the Hard Drive itself is likely at fault, in this case reply to me with your Country, State and City and I will refer you to the closest Data Recovery Facuility with Mac capabilities to have your data retrieved,

Of course if the only data on it is still accesible on the computer and it's a dead drive, just buy a new external, head home and rerun the backups manually as in this case it's cheaper to chuck and replace the external than have it recovered.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Vista is not picking up my maxtor harddriver but wheni had xp was .

Check the disk management MMC - it's likely that you have another drive letter that is conflicting with the Maxtor.
1. Right Click on the Computer Icon (or in the menu),
2. click on Managment,
3. look for Disk Management(on the left side) and click on that.
4. This will show you all the installed HD's that you have.

Your main HD is probably called Disk 0. IF there are any other HD's listed they will probably be labled "removeable", if it doesn't have a drive letter assigned to it do the following:

1. Right click on the Disk (X) that does not have a drive letter. (it should be a "Removable Drive")
2. Select Change drive letter and Paths.
3. Choose a drive letter from the list that is not used, I suggest W or Z just to be sure.
4. After you do that it should come up in My Computer as an available drive.

IF the External Drive is not listed then you need to change the USB port or try it on another PC to see if it works there.

Maxtor external hard drive failure

If you really want those files, try DriveSavers.com. They do wonders with dead hard drives (known to have recovered files off a burned hard disk). But it comes with a hefty price. So check their website, http://www.drivesavers.com/.
