My unit keeps shorting out. wondering if its my car or the unit?

Ok so i've dealt with this problem for awhile now. I bought this system awhile ago: two 800 watt poineer subs, a 1200 watt sony xplode amp, two 300 watt speakers, and this head unit which ran my speakers. It ran great for awhile but then i started having trouble with what seemed to be the amp. For example when the volume was up higher it would turn itself off or short out. The fuse on the power cable to the amp blew so i just left it like that. The fuse blew because there was exposed wire...so i know that stuff is ok. So i then thought things were fine because i thought the amp was the problem, but the music was still shorting out at higher volumes. I think it has to be some sort of power issue because when the bass hits in the songs i can see a couple of my gauges on my dashboard bouncing to it. So when the bass hits the gauges jump! Also at night it shorts out at a lower volume due to my headlights. For example, if i turn my brights on sometimes the head unit turns itself off and then back on again. It has done that continuously before as well...so i had to take the faceplate off to make it stop. I took my car to autozone to see if it was a battery problem but they tested it and said it was fine, but he said the alternator could need changing. I told him about my situation and he said a new alternator wouldn't do anything. So i'm desparate and need to figure this out! I want to listen to music like i used to! What can i do?

I would hazard to guess that you are running a speaker "ohm load" that is less than 4 ohms per channel. Or 8 ohms if you are running in bridged mode. You should NEVER blow a fuse. Re-check all your connections. Your "cutting out when the headlights are on" problem is due to low battery voltage to the amp. Use bigger wire on both your +12 lead and your ground lead. Make sure your battery to chassis ground lead is even bigger than your amps power lead. Make sure your amps ground lead is big, beefy, and short. And get a boost capacitor. When you have a huge amp in the trunk, you must treat it as if you are trying to run your engine starter from the trunk when it comes to the size of your hot wire and ground wire. Good luck.

We need help with an overheating problem on our 1999 Cadillac DeVille. We've replaced many parts and wonder if it may be air in the cooling system. Please help.

Could be.
Has the thermostat been replaced ?
You could run the engine without the radiator cap to see if the system has air pockets.
A restriction in the exhaust could cause the engine to run hotter on the road than on short trips.

if it is cooling properly I would not worry about it.AC unit should sweat if it is hot outside but depends on the humidity level.usually if it is real hot and it is not sweating it is low in freon.

You've got a short... I'd see if the contacts for the battery or usb ports have corrosion on them- a little contact cleaner does wonders. Otherwise, the best bet would be to replace the phone- unless you can find the corrosion, it will just continue to reset itself

The only way to fix that is to call the company and purchase a new face plate. If you bought it from a store, and it's still under warranty, they MIGHT be kind enough to replace it. I've been fortunate enough that I've been able to establish a rapport with the companies that I've dealt with that they would do this for me. A lot of companies won't though. Best bet, contact the manufacture so you can buy a new faceplate.

sounds like it is failing. When was the last time you tested its capacity? Test it to see how long the battery works. If it doesnt then get a new one or send it back where you got it.

It's really sad that Hitachi has resorted to not taking care of it's customer's anymore regarding the obvious light engine DEFECT! Several of us on fixya dealt with Hitachi's customer relations department, got a new light engine and our set is like brand new. I personally sent out over 80 suggestions related to this problem. I have to believe that they've stopped due to the number of us that have had problems and the $$ it's cost them...too bad! Make a product that last like they use to! This is our second Hitachi TV and it will be our last. They did send a new light engine and it fixed our set which looks great...for now. Having said that, there are too many other, reputable companies to go with that will take care of the customer long after the sale.

We just bought a 42" Samsung for our master bedroom and we were sure to get the 4 year extended warranty. In the past, we would have never considered getting the extended warranty because things lasted. Not anymore!

I'm certainly not one of the "conspiracy theory" types but one would have to wonder. Over the past 10 years, my husband and I have bought 2 Hitachi sets that cost around $8000 total. Do they now have a "short shelf live" so to speak to keep us buying a new set every 3-4 years?? I have a friend that has a 25" Sanyo that she bought at Kmart 10 years ago and it's still going strong. Makes you wonder...hummmm!
