i believe win7 supports your hp printer but not the fax feature your printer has, but still you can manually install it, if you still have the cd driver of your printer. if incase you lost it, you can still download it. www.fileguru.com then just type hp j4580 printer driver.
Your telepone line has to be pluged in to the fax first .then put your phone in the exit port. fax has to hear in comming tones first so it will know what to do. no other phones can be on same in comming line. If you exter phones on this # you will half to unplug them. Or put in a line only for the fax. Good luck hope this helps
Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

Do you have the full-feature software installed? What OS is on your computer? Assuming you have the full-feature software installed (installed before connecting the printer to the computer) and a direct USB connection (with a good cable and functioning USB port), you have two choices.
Start the scan from the computer (have the document face down on the glass or face up in the ADF (for models with the document feed) and the all-in-one ready. For this, with Windows, launch the HP Solution Center (Start > All Programs > HP > HP Solution Center), then click either the Scan Photo or Scan Document button in the program. Set the desired scan settings (this should come up if it wasn't turned off) then click Scan.
Alternatively, you can start the scan from the button (it's the one closest to the button with an X (cancel) on the all-in-one and that will launch the HP Solution Center (assuming HP Digital Imaging Monitor is running). The scan menu will also come up on the printer screen with requests for more setting information (destination etc.)
With Win7 and Vista, Paint will acquire scans (Import from Camera or Scanner). Some versions of Vista and most of Win7 also include Windows Fax and Scan which will also handle new scans.
Press setup (wrench sign button ) button on printer and use arrow keys to goto print reports menu , press OK on print reports menu , under this select fax confirmation and press OK, it will print the confirmation page.
It is not possible to email the scanned file directly through the printer. However, you may send fax over the Internet
You may subscribe to a low cost phone service that allows you to send and receive faxes with your device by using the Internet. This method is called Fax over Internet Protocol (FoIP). You probably use a FoIP service (provided by your telephone company) if you: • Dial a special access code along with the fax number, or • Have an IP converter box that connects to the Internet and provides analog phone ports for the fax connection.
NOTE: You can only send and receive faxes by connecting a phone cord to the port labeled "1-LINE" on the device. This means that your connection to the Internet must be done either through a converter box (which supplies regular analog phone jacks for fax connections) or your telephone company.
Some Internet faxing services do not work properly when the device is sending and receiving faxes at high speed (33600bps). If you experience problems sending and receiving faxes while using an Internet fax service, use a slower fax speed. You can do this by changing the Fax Speed setting from High (the default) to Medium. For information on changing this setting, see Set the fax speed. If you have questions about internet faxing, contact your internet faxing services support department.
Uninstall everything that has to do with your old HP printer, drivers, photo processing, etc. Reinstall software with J4580 printer. That should open HP Digital Imaging Monitor where you can set scanning options. Plug printer into the back opf your computer. Plug power supply directly into the wall socket.
