My WD 320 GB works fine with my VAIO laptop running Vista but does not apear in the explorer on the desktop PC running XP. The hardware gets detected but no drive, files and folders showing in the windows explorer. I've tried several desktops at work and one other laptop - none of them showing the drive. Very strange.

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it.
If not - try to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer to recover your files.

I have two hard drives.. WD 320 gigs & Seagate 250 gigs. Both drives are not booting. No sounds, nothing. I tried the freezer technique but not worth it. There's no clicking sound. I think the disc inside...

looking inside was a big error, that floods the internals with dust
the heads will now crash. but its dead anyway,, so no foul.
use your ears, not looking inside. gee. whirrrrrrr, try a good drive and listen, train those ears.....!!!
if it dont spin, or you can not feel the gyro effect (try that on good drive)
then the drive is bad. (or no power, +5v and +12v are mandatory)
you only said Seatage, they make vast types of drives, so I really dont know what you have, not really.

the drive (SATA/PATA but NOT SCSI or SAS) must spin up
with power, if not
1:bad power,
2; bad drive.
end of story.

ever held a gyro, like in boy scouts or? or NAVY.
it fights you when you ,try to change directions, of the drive case.
the gyro effect. all HDD do this., spinning at full speed.

is that enough help, if confused read an A+ book, all this is covered in one book.

if not pata/sata drives, the controller or drive must be commanded
to spin up. (servers use these drives)

Hi think I by mistake deleted all from my wd3200, also the drivers. this done on a mac, so ok to see there, but if i plug into a pc it does not show, perhaps i deleted some drivers? hope you can...

It sounds like you have formatted the drive for a mac. To enable it to be viewed on both a mac and a PC you will need to reformat it as a PC hard drive with disk utility which can be found in the applications folder and then the utilities folder. Hope this helps.

Make sure its turned on and plugged in, try another port.

Yes. The case doesn't care what size the drive is. The computer is just asking for the USB driver for the case. Check the WD site for the driver for the model of MyBook that you have. That should cover it.

Does it make any clicking/clunking sounds like any of these?
If yes - it's really bad. If it sounds normal then try to remove it from enclosure and connect directly to a PC.

External hard drive not recognized

I have a WD3200 usb Hard drive. I am looking to partition it. The problem i encountered is when I go to the disk management, the drive shows up as disk one but below it , it says no media. its like the computer knows that there is an external storage device attatched but cannot access it. Also if I try to get into the disk from my computer, it says "insert disk"

Any suggestions?

My book premium edition ii and windows vista

I am running 4 WD SATA drive internally on Vista Ultimate, and no problem. I have a simpletech USB 360gb external drive that I had not used after the VISTA install. After reading your problem, I hooked it up and turned it on, and it worked just fine. However, the computer forums are FULL of folks complaining about the My Book drives. WD site shows extra drivers for Win98 (as expected) and nothing for VISTA (would not think you would need one)

I would disconnect the MY BOOK. Get the PC running on its internal drives. Remove any MY BOOK drivers (they are likely for Win98). Reboot the PC. Connect the MY BOOK drive to a usb port and turn it on. If it doesn't come up as an external drive, I would think there was something wrong with it and contact Western Digital. You SHOULD NOT require VISTA drivers for any USB device. My warranty experience with WD has always been outstanding. Hope this helps
