Question about Philips DVD & Blu-Ray Players

I cannot open the DVD drawer on my Philips DVDR3480 DVD RECORDER – it just won’t open? The screen display just keeps saying ‘Error’. Any help is appreciated.

I have two of these dvd recorders and both have the exact same problem where the drive won't open. It opens fine when there is a disc in the tray. So I just unscrewed the cover, press the white part which would be over the center of the disc as it's trying to open, it should then open. Then just make sure there is always disc left in the tray.

brilliant, I just recapped the power supply on my broken 3480 tonight and forgot about that sticking door. I wasnt happy banging it all the time to open. I just tightened up the screws for the drive, bend the front metal shielding down ever so slightly, and as Mark says, as long as there's a disk in the drive it'll always open ok. I just have to put a sticker on mine saying 'DO NOT LEAVE DVD EMPTY'. Pressing the white disk on top of the drive works fine when the top cover is off, but that is not an option while I have a 2yr old running around ;) .

This worked for me too... Leaving a disc in all the time seems to work... Can't believe this doesn't have a place to slide in a paper clip to open it. Thanks Mark

The DVD drawer might have a small hole under the tray. You can use a straightened paper clip to push into the hole and this is supposed to manually push the slot out enough to grab and pull out. The DVD might not be seated in there.

I have the same model with the same problem. If you tap the unit above the dvd drawer it should open. It may take two attemps to find the exact spot and the right weight to the hit (it's not a hard hit).

Phili[s dvd3480 has stopped recording when finalizing only reaches 98% and stops please help

That last part is the actual finalizing - the writing of the track end data. That data is identical for all the disks and it should be copied from the data stored in the firmware.
If the finalizing fails it's because the firmware has been corrupted. This happened because there has been a fault in the processor of the recorder. All you can do is to do a firmware upgrade. You can find it here, with the instructions

DVD DRAWER won't open

OK.
I assume the display does not say 'locked' when you press eject.
A DVD drawer is run by a small rubber belt on most of these old machines. This belt can be worn out (Very common)
The DVD drawer position is detected by a switch that can be pressed in or out to detect the drawer is closed or open. This switch can cause the drawer to stay in if it thinks the drawer is not yet closed. Cleaning the switch (Take the DVD drive out and remove and clean or replace the switch) can usually fix this.
A fault with the DVD process cicuit board can also cause this. I would recommend a new machine if this is the case.
Testing:
Bad belt - the DVD drawer shifts a bit when the eject button is pressed.
Bad switch - a whirring sound can always be heard when the DVD is first powered on. May give an error in the display.
Bad process board - Generally, says open forever or close forever and will not change back to normal display. You cannot get any other functions to work after you press eject. Unplug the machine, its normal until you press eject again. (just a generic common thing)

Unlock region code for Philips DVDR3480 region code 5

Here you go.....

The only thing you do to unlock DVDR3480 is this:

With NO disc in your DVDR3480-player you press SETUP on the remote and then press this code: 5 0 1 8 ,now you can pick Region-code with the remote from 0-6
( 0=Region free)

Drawer won't open. Says "blocked".

I had the same problem with a comparable device. It turned out that the drive belt that operates the ejection mechanism wears out or breaks.
To get at it you need to do the following:
1. remove device cover

2. remove the identification cover on the front of the DVD tray. This may be tricky if you can't open the tray. You need to find a way, because otherwise you can't remove the DVD unit, at least not on my unit.
3. remove the DVD unit by detaching the cables and removing four screws.

4. remove the two top screws on the DVD unit
5. remove the front top cover of the DVD unit by pushing the two tabs on the top of the unit, near the front.

6. Now remove the tray, by pulling it out as far as it goes and then pressing two tabs on either side of the tray. These tabs look like this:

7. Now you get at the drive belt. Originally it was black; I replaced it (temporarily) with a red one in the picture below:

8. Now put everything back together.
