Chech engine light come on steady not flashing and engine quits, starts right backbup and no chech engine light
Possibly - Mass Air Flow Sensor, poor oxygen mix
Possibly -Air Intake Sensor at Intake manifold, clean with carb cleaner.
Possibly - Crank Shaft Positioning Magnet, not aligning properly
Possibly - Oxygen senors, 1 before catalytic and 1 after it, poor exhaust eventing stemming from clogging catalytic converter
Possibly - Clogging in fuel delivery system starting from fuel pump and ending at intake manifold.
I would check these in that order.
SOURCE: the trans am starts, runs, but when going down the
so many variables to this one, Especially if yer not the first owner. It would help to know what kinda motor it had in it, Fuel injected or Carbed? If Injected, what kind? TPI or TBI?
without knowing ANY of this. it sounds like Fuel Pressure, Carb needs tuning ( if carbed), or Timing/distributer cap needs adjusting.. theres a possiblity it's all three heh. On the plus side. the second two items are incredibly cheap to have done ( prolly go to any shop and have them adjust both for 20-30 bucks).
If it's the fuel pressure you could be looking anywhere from a 15 dollar part to... well. alot more.
Again, hard to say without knowing so many variables, but those are my best educated guesses with NO information about your paticular motor.

Sounds like an intermittent short in the wire harness or ECU(computer).
If you can locate the computer(in the passenger side kickpanel), try
tapping on it with a plastic handled screwdriver handle, to see if the car
suddenly shuts down? If it does, your computer is shot. Good luck.

this happened with me because of the funky double cable on the hot side. i finally tooke the rubber cover off the the top part and now my car does not cutt off going down the road.
