I bought a new desktop to use with my old screen. Now for some reason the image is a little wider than the screen. Vertically everything is OK. This happens both under Windows and Linux.

Probably the new pc was setup to use a wide screen monitor, which you did not buy.
You need to adjust the resolution to match your existing monitor.
Win XP -right click on the desktop and choose properties (or Graphis Properties. same for Vista or 7). Then choose settings. This will allow to choose your res. Try 1024 X 1260 first. Click apply..
If anything goes wrong, just wait 15 seconds and it will return back automatically. You have to click "accept" to save the change. Don't know about Linux.

Call the cable company and tell them you have router - they need to set-up your modem to accept the router.

My e machine crashed i reinstall win xp now it will not connect to the internet using dsl device manager said that modem was working also there are no com ports showing

HI jar5. Did you install the ethernet driver after the Windows reinstallation? The DSL modem uses 2 interfaces. The USB and the Ethernet. YOu can use the modem´s Driver to use it thru the USB or you can use another computer go to the emachines´website and under support or drivers select your model and download the drivers because probably you also dont have sound, etc. I hope this helps. Please do not forget to rate and provide positive feedback for our fast - free support today. Thank you :D

I can't access the Web through my Linux operating system. Do I need a special Web modem?

Hello,
The answer to the question is not easy.
If you have a broadband (cable, DSL), or wireless connection you DO NOT need a special modem.
If you connect through DIAL UP, by composing a telephone number you do that through a telephone modem. But these modems are of two sorts: a hardware modem or a software modem. A few years ago, the Linux distributions did not support software modem; only true (hardware) modem were supported.
So, if you do not use dial up you do not need a special modem.
Hope it helps.

The pc asked for product key on the pc, but when typed in, will no accept the code. Also rtied putting windows xp on system and the pc would not accept the product key for that program either. there are...

You will have to phone Microsoft - sorry it's annoying I know. There is a phone number to call once the activation fails for the fist time.
It shouldn't take you long, and I don't expect you will have any issues activating Windows over the phone.
Cheers!

A recent mac laptop with Tiger & bootcamp/win XP will connect to the internet via a Netgear DG834G adsl modem with ethernet cable in tiger & XP but only in xp with wireless. Any advice? JL

If I understand you correctly you have an Intel based MAC, with the boot-camp boot manager, so you can choose to boot either from the native MAC OS or from Windows XP.

The system works fine from the MAC OS, but the (wired) ethernet does not work from XP.

1) When you boot into XP mode, the XP operating system is in
charge and the MAC OS is dormant.

2) Check the XP device manager to see if the ethernet NIC
(network device) is properly installed and if the device
drivers are functioning.

From Windows XP:

Right click My Computer ==> Properties => Hardware ==>
==> Device Manager ==> Network Adapters =>
==> Your network controller

Right click on your network controller ==> properties

Check the device status !!!

2) If the device is NOT working properly, you may need to
download and install a device driver for this card.

3) If the device IS working properly, you may need to run
the NETWORK SETUP WIZARD from the control panel:

START ==> Control Panel ==> Network Setup Wizard ==>
==> Next.

4) Assuming you are connecting to DSL with a login password,
use the: "My computer connect to the internet through a
modem" option.

If your DSL is always on, or if you use a local router to
connect to the DSL modem (the router does the work)

Then you choose the: "My computer connects to the
internet through another computer or a residential gateway"
option.
