I have an STR-DE335 which had been sitting in storage for some time and I have recently pulled it out to use as a cheap PA amp for a speaker system I am building. The amp works fine except for there is now a low frequency hum coming through the speakers. It is only just noticable without the 'bass boost' option turned on, but with bass boost turned on it is quite loud. The strange thing is is that there have been a couple of times during my testing of the amp (maybe around 5 hours now) where it has stopped humming and I have been able to use the bass boost function with no hum whatsoever. But then after turning off the amp and then turning it back on again later, the hum returns =( I'm thinking it might be a loose connection, although I cant seem to replicate the problem by gently bumping the amp..

This is a piece of **** unit. Mine only works on the left side, sometimes. When those times are I have NO idea. It doesn't seem to play 5.1 correctly and it goes into speaker protect mode for NO reason. It is TRUE lemon !!! ..let me know if you have any other problems with this JUNK [email protected]

I had this problem last night.
To solve it, you can reset the amp by:
1) Put the receiver on stand-by
2) Hold down "MODE" button and press on button
3) "S.F. CLR" appears in the display and surround is back on.
Good luck

Hi,
your problem is a bad solder connection of the relay linked to the lautspeaker sockets. I had the same problem and googled for the solution. Since I resoldered the pins everything is fine. That problem is well known and happens to a lot of Sony receivers.
I can send you a link with a detailed how-to-do solution with pictures, however it's written in german language. But you can use some online translators.

Is the audio for the center channel driven by its own amp? No other channels on it or affected?
Assuming you're not cranking it up to "11" to rattle the walls...
I think what you're hearing is the protection relay dropping out - removing power from the output stages of the amp when the amp thinks something is amiss. If it turns on OK after being OFF for a while and repeats the loop you probably have a heat issue.
A solid click OFF that is not resettable would possibly be a short in the speaker path - shorted speaker wire or speaker.
Check the amp to see if it was hot to the touch or getting warmer up to the point it clicked off.
Is it ventilated properly with no heat-producing components below it? Clean out its vents and make sure it can breath. If it has a fan make sure it's working and has good airflow.

Press and hold down the power button on the front panel until you hear a secondary "click" from inside the chassis. That takes about 15 seconds.
Then read my tutorial on how to keep your receiver out of protect mode.
