You may go to the gateway website and download a manual , for free, for your model which gives you the directions  for removing /replacing the hard drive. It is acually not difficult.

Prepare the laptop for disassembly. Shut down the laptop completely, then wait a few minutes before removing the battery and unplugging the AC adapter. Turn the laptop over and lay it down on a flat surface so that the battery area is facing away from you and the hard drive is located at the bottom left corner.

Remove the hard drive cover. Remove the two screws located on the left side of the hard drive cover, then lift the cover to remove it completely from the unit.

Remove the memory cover. Unscrew the eight screws holding the memory board in place; this cover is located above the Gateway product sticker.

Disconnect the Wi-Fi adaptor. Remove the Wi-Fi cover by unscrewing the single screw holding the Wi-Fi adapter in place; this is located directly above the hard drive. Remove the two cables connecting the wireless card to the adapter and snap the card out of the holder.

Remove the memory modules. Gateway computers typically have two memory modules located in the center of the motherboard; lift these out gently with your fingers and set them aside.

Release the heat sink. Unscrew the four screws around the heat sink assembly; this unit is located to the left of the ventilation fan and is surrounded by a copper base. Carefully lift the heat sink and the cooling fan off the unit and unplug the cable attaching it.

Remove the CD/DVD drive. Unscrew the small screw located to the left of the CD/DVD drive, then push the drive out to remove it from the laptop completely.

Remove all screws around the base of the laptop. You will now be left with a total of 18 screws located around the edge of the base of the laptop, and in between the stickers and hardware components in the center. Remove all of these carefully and set aside in a safe place.

Prepare the cover for removal. Turn the laptop up on its edge so that the back of the laptop is facing you; you will see two screws on the hinges of the computer. Unscrew these and set them aside.

Remove the hinge cover. Open the laptop so that the screen is laying flat; use the flathead screwdriver to pry open the hinge cover and pull it off gently with your fingers.

Remove the keyboard. Lift up the keyboard and reach behind it to release the cable. You will need to tug gently on the cable to unhook it from the motherboard.

Unhook the LCD screen from the notebook. Unplug the Wi-Fi antenna cables located on the right side of the motherboard directly under the screen, then unplug the video cable located directly under the hinge cover. Remove the pair of screws located to the left and right of the LCD screen and gently lift the LCD screen off the notebook's base unit.

Remove the system board. Turn the base unit over and unscrew the five screws securing the motherboard to the base. Two of these are located near the hinge cover, and two are located beneath and to the right of the hard drive unit. The fifth is located a few inches below the top right edge of the laptop.

Disconnect the motherboard. Lift the system board, then unhook the cable connecting it to the base unit.

How to replace a IDE Hard Drive

The following tip is a step by step instruction guide to replace your IDE Hard drive.

Before you start working with any of the Computer hardware, you need tobe sure that your computer is switched off. Also, unplug your computerfrom all cables.

Once you are done with the above steps, you need to open your computercase at the side on which the motherboard is not situated. This isusually done by unscrewing the 2 screws at the back of the panel.

Now slide away the panel gently and expose the inside of your computer.
You will be able to see a clear view of the hard drive. You will also be able to see the screws which holds the hard drive in place. There is usually only 2 screws, but if you unscrew the 2 screws and the hard drive is still attached to the case, you need to unscrew the other side panel as well to unscrew these other 2 screw.

When you are done unscrewing the hard drive, you can gently remove it from the hard drive slot.

Now, unplug the cables from the hard drive. you will just plug this cables back into the new hard drive. Just remember, if you plug in the new hard drive, you need to check the jumper settings. If this is the only drive, and you want to install the Operating system on this drive, it needs to be set to primary. Otherwise, to secondary.

After you have checked the jumper settings, you can plug back the Hard drive and just reverse the previous steps.

I really hope this can steer you in the right directions.

Kind regards

Won't see hard drive

Try just removing both cables from the back of the hard drive for about 30 seconds then plug them back in.

Check inside your bios for Large Drive Support or AHCI. If you see AHCI try changing it's setting and see if the drive is recognized. I've seen many times where just changing the AHCI makes the drive suddenly appear.

GATEWAY 5412 Hard Drive Problem - Computer will not boot. My computer has been working great for a while now with no issues, then the other day we tried to turn it on and got the message 'the hard...

If I had your disk, I MIGHT be able to get your data. From afar, I don't have much hope. You might try HDD from here: Yes it is not free but it depends on how much you value your data.
I've used it very successfully but if the disk is REALLY bad it won't do any good.,
You could try it in another computer and see if you can get your data off of it on to a USB or CD.

"Flex the case in the middle and the undercarriage will drop out."
"Slide the front cover a couple inches left and remove screws, then
turn it around and lift the cover one inch to remove third screw."
"Stroke the front left corner lightly, singing a lullaby, then flip it

Need to replace my harddrive

If your system is running under warranty. I suggest not to open the system. Just take the system to manufacture support center they will replace it without any cost.

But make sure you have the bill copy and warranty document with you.

If it is already over just unscrew the cabinet and remove the replace the new disk with new one.

I just wanna know how to replace an acer laptop hard drive with a bigger one

Usually you

1) purchase the new hard drive
2) look around the base of your laptop to find where the HDD is, if you look at the manual which im sure acer will have on its site it will show you
3) usually 1 or 2 screws are unscrewed and you slide out the hard drive, it will be in a special holder
4) unscrew the old hard drive and insert the new one and secure it in place like the old one.
5) insert, re-do screws up, turn on laptop.

this new hard drive wont have any information on it so you will need to reinstall windows on that drive.
