Irish Druid, How hard is it to tell if air is moving? Does smoke follow the air or does the smoke move the air? If a down feather fell would it be in an updraft?

There are two fans. One is an internal cooling fan, which runs when the microwave is heating. You would probably not be able to feel air flow from it as most of the air movement is internal. The other fan is the exhaust fan, which you control with the fan switch. That air enters through the grease filter(s) on the bottom of the microwave and is either vented outdoors, or through a charcoal filter back through the front grill into the room, depending on how the oven was installed. You may have to provide more information (about which fan, how micro is vented, etc.) if you still think you have a problem.

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:
- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose conneciton on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part

Get it checked by a repairman.

Thanks

Try unplugging it for a few seconds or turning off the circut breaker to it. This usually resets the unit.

When turning Fan on (any speed), top vent grille blowing lots of air, but not pulling air underneath

some microwaves vent to the exterior. check outside for a vent. If it is a recirculating model, perhaps the filters are plugged, the vent pathway is blocked (packaging material) or a loose panel at the back so that the exhaust fan air is leaking out somewhere else. I don't know what else it could be unless the fan is loose on the motor shaft and the fan motor is running but the fan blades are not moving air.

Hot microwave door handle

I always recommend that you use the vent fan whenever you're cooking on the stove top to keep heat, steam, and grease out of the controls and door panels.

Can you put and over-the-counter microwave over a stove?

Yes, that is what they are made for, As long as it has a vent that can be used to vent the smoke from cooking it can be mounted over the stove. Normally the bottom of the microwave should be mounted 16" to 19" above the stove top. The microwave must have a vent with a blower motor in order to be used above a stove top. Most have a thermal switch that will turn the microwave vent on once the temperature reaches a set point.

Exhaust fan doesn't work and blows air from top vent

Some microwaves have a adjustable fan. We have one that you can vent out the back, the back top or through the front top filters. The latter is what it sounds like you have. If you take the small back panel off and lift out the fan motor you'll see that you can place it in the direction you like.\\

Blower motor on above stove microwave not running

The dual fan in the back is the vent / exhaust / hood fa. It will run when you turn it on, or if the stove top gets too hot.

The other fan is the magnetron cooling fan, and it will only run when you are cooking. If it is not running, your magnetron can be destroyed.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here. That may help you a lot.

Partial venting

Are you running the vent fan whenever you cook on the stove top? You should.

And you should run it on high if you're having steam problems.

Otherwise, you'll need to do something like use a small counter top fan to help circulate the air better.

Please let us know if we can help further.

GE spacemaker Profile XL1800 vent fan will not shut off

It may be a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel, such as a sticky relay.

I would suspect a sticky relay first, but the door switches should be checked.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

If you need your control panel assembly (smart board) repaired, we do that for $39.95 nationwide.
