You may have to replace the RAM modules and/or the CMOS battery.

Emachine T 5212, when i turn it on,, a siren sounds,,then computer shuts off

In your computer (as well as other gadgets), the battery powers a chip called the Real Time Clock (RTC)chip. The RTC is essentially a quartz watch that runs all the time, whether or not the computer has power. The battery powers this clock. When the computer boots up, part of the process is to query the RTC to get the correct time and date. A little quartz clock like this might run for five to seven years off of a small battery. Then it is time to replace the battery.

This does not explain why your computer would not boot, however. You would expect the computer to boot fine but have an incorrect time and date. The reason your computer would not boot is because the RTC chip also contains 64 (or more) bytes of random access memory (RAM). The clock uses 10 bytes of this space, leaving 54 bytes for other purposes. The BIOS stores all sorts of information in the CMOS RAM area, like the number of floppy and hard disk drives, the hard disk drive type, etc. If the CMOS RAM loses power, the computer may not know anything about the hard disk configuration of your machine, and therefore it cannot boot.

Many more modern computers are not quite so dependent on the CMOS RAM. They store the settings innon-volatile RAM that works without any power at all. If the battery goes dead, the clock fails but the computer can still boot using the information in the non-volatile RAM area. I would change the battery and make sure unit is unplugged and my other hand is touching the metal frame on the computer to stop static discharge. Blow out the inside of the computer completely.Start computer with case off and make sure all the fans run and don't sound like a siren.Replace anything not running. It may not boot if the BIOS can't see the hard drives. You might have to start computer and watch the screen and when it asks you to hit a key to get into like the bios do it and see if you can reset it. If nothing seems be running right maybe the power supply went out they are real cheep at Tiger Direct.

Dell Vostro 1500 Laptop: Without any obvious warning, my laptop will no longer boot into windows vista beyond the "microsoft corporation" screen with the green progress bar. it will get past the...

@rkbrown1_rb

If your Dell diagnostics shows no fault on the hardware (hdd, memory, chipset, videocard, etc.) but still same issue occurs, I recommend doing another test using a different utility. Try using Hiren's Boot CD that can be found here and try running the S&M Stress Test 1.9.1 and Video Memory Stress Test 1.7.116. If your computer hangs while doing the stress tests, the video card or CPU might be failing already.

Good Luck.

A message appears on my boot screen that a parameter has exceeded its range so i need to back up. My mouse alone freezes all the time

The message about parameters is from SMART monitoring, a function of the motherboard. SMART monitoring keeps a watch on several hard drive parameters, and warns you when they go out of preset limits. It's meant as an early warning that the drive may be failing, and you should back up any important data while you still can. The message doesn't mean that hard drive failure is imminent, but it's a good idea to do the backup if you haven't. It's probably also a good idea to buy a replacement hard drive now. They aren't expensive. Use a program like Norton Ghost to copy the current drive image to the new one, and you won't need to restore your system from scratch later.

Your mouse problem might be related to the disk drive, or it could just be a coincidence. A new mouse is cheap if the freezing keeps happening after you resolve the hard drive issue.

Computer Freezes unless pressure applied

With the laptop turned off, take out the hard drive completely from the laptop and then reseat it back into its slot and make sure its nice and snug.

Then go ahead and turn it on and see it will run without freezing on you and having to apply pressure on the keyboard.

If that doesn't work then disconnect the keyboard and see if it will run smoothly without the keyboard. If it does then you might have a stuck key on the keyboard that is making the unit freeze so you might have to replace the keyboard.

If computer starts up all the way in safe mode, you have a better chance of salvaging this system.
If not, the hard drive may be crashed (physical damage, scraping oxide from the platters).
Worst case, you would have to replace hard drive and re-install windows and everything else.
Best case, a repair function can be done from a winXP CD that will replace windows files without erasing anything else.

If there is precious data on the hard drive, a data recovery may be in order.
I can provide a reliable and reasonable source for this service if needed.

Computer freezing

The shutting down as well as the freezing issue could have been caused by any one or all of the hardware you replaced.......the trick is to change one thing at a time to help narrow it down

Assuming the Ram/HD/PS are new and ok I would look at overheating problems.... is the computer dusty ...look at the Heatsink on the CPU is it clogged with dust and are all the fans working ......use an Air compressor or a can of air from a computer shop to blow the dust out....

Another reason could be a Virus or spyware/malware ....run a full Antivirus/Spyware check ........
