Gasket came loose and rapped around laundry-tub seems loose

-   I have a whirpool duet washing machine. The front of the gasket has become a bit misshapen. Today the spring tightened metal ring was loose and I found 4 socks trapped inside the area typically blocked off by the rubber gasket. I re fit the metal ring but there still seems to be a bit of play. the gasket is tight at the top but very loose and ill-fiting at the bottom. I'm running it again to see if it will leak. help? -   silvachr
